I’m a parent who had both my daughters attend Evangel Christian School from Kindergarten to High School. They’ve both graduated from Evangel High – my youngest in 2009. It was a sacrifice for us but it was well worth it! The teachers and administrative staff were caring and my daughters had some great relationships with teachers over the years. I could go to work in peace knowing that they were in a caring, supportive, safe environment where they knew them by face and name. It was important to me that the girls go to a school that cared about academic excellence as well as the spiritual component of their lives. My girls developed their artisitc gifts at Evangel also. Moreover, I wanted a school that reinforced my Christian values at home and at church and I got it. Seriously, this is faith based learning at it’s best!

NJHS Visits the New York Founding

For the 2009-2010 academic year, Evangel’s National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) decided to raise money for the NY Founding as their service project.  Our NJHS treasurer, Keoana Arnett (an eighth grader), is adopted and her mother spoke with the NJHS advisor of the various organization she knew about.

As stated on their website, “Founded in 1869 as a home for abandoned children, The New York Foundling has continuously and conscientiously expanded its scope of programs to meet the changing needs of the communities we serve. The Foundling’s diverse network of programs works interactively to provide care for families with multiple social, economic, medical, and psychological needs. We protect children from abuse and neglect; we help teen mothers and other overstressed parents to meet the challenges of parenthood; we help developmentally disabled people achieve maximum independence; we provide educationally-enriched child care and preschool; and we meet a variety of community needs in neighborhoods struggling with poverty, drugs, and violence.”

Through bake sales held throughout the year, in which students baked or brought in yummy treats themselves, NJHS raised $300.00 which we presented to Mr. Alan Schatz, a program director at the New York Foundling, on May 27, 2010.  Mr. Schatz provided a tour of the Crisis Nursery to our NJHS students.  The Crisis Nursery is a facility that accepts children at any hour or any day if the parent is unable to care for them at that time.  Mr. Schatz was so grateful and sent a beautiful letter of appreciation to our students in recognition of their endeavors.  Pictures of our day can be see in our school’s website gallery.

NJHS looks forward to the 2010-2011 year in which we can raise both awareness and money for another great cause.

Please see “Galleries” for some cool pics!

Mission’s Trip is Huge Success!

This year’s Mission’s Trip took place from may 30th to June 4th, at our very own CAMP EVANGEL located in Byrne, New York!!! Yipeeee! The students had a great time working around the community and “lending a helping hand”. This year we reached out to the local area and offered assistance in many different areas: a local hotel where we cleaned, and painted, a local cemetery where we replaced rocks and cleared brush, a local preserve where we fixed trails and cleared brush and trees, local community buildings where we scraped and painted, a local church where we cleaned , gardened and painted.

What a great time the students had sharing the love of God with the community. There was also lots of time to spend at the Camp having a blast!!! Students went kayaking, rode golf carts, walked up the mountain at night using light from torches, went to a local cave, camped outside and had huge campfires each night will sharing what the Lord had done.

Please go to “Galleries” for some awwesome pictures!

Season Champions

baseball_hg_clr

As the season approached us, the excitement for baseball’s return to Evangel was so strong that it was hard not to expect great things. And as the head coach, I can say our Eagles did accomplish great things. We came into the season with many questions about how we would look as a team and how the competition would be in our league. We finished in first place (Season Champions) with an 8-2 record. In the semi-finals we fought hard and received 2nd Place by an extra inning game to Brooklyn Friends. To add to our teams success, our captain Ronald Barillas was honored with the league MVP award.

In our teams very first meeting,  I told them I was looking for a group of guys who would help me build the foundation to a successful high school baseball program that honors the Lord. As I look forward to the upcoming season, I say proudly that Evangel Christian School is now running a respected baseball program that gives all the glory to God.

Giving all the glory to Jesus Christ,

Coach Berrios

ECS Track Team

track

This track season I have had the honor and privilege of working with nineteen gifted athletes. From the first day of tryouts they were told that once on the team they would be pushed far beyond what they believed to be their limits. Tryouts consisted of two solid hours of track drills, which were designed to test how in shape the athlete was in.

To be a member of the track team one has to be hard working, dedicated, motivated, and have self-confident. There is no glory in Track and Field, no pep rally’s, no home crowd to cheer you on. Track and Field is solely about individual talent and constantly striving to be better then the previous day. Throughout the season these athletes were tested both mentally and physically. They were challenged and asked to perform far beyond what they believed they could handle. But time and time again these athletes rose to the occasion and proved how much they wanted to be a part of the team. For most of the athletes on track team this season was one that established in their mind that they can stick with and preserver through any obstacle and that giving up is not an option.

Please check out “Galleries” for some great pics!

Let’s Dance

High school elective Dance class has been working real hard on their dance routines for the Spring Celebration coming up in May. They will be doing all different types of dance routines. Some students have been working on acrobats routines, while others are doing salsa, house, hip hop and even flag routines. Some of the students performed their dance routine on cafe night for Youth On Fire. They did a great job!

MLHS Tournament

This previous Saturday (10/3/09) the Lady Eagles Girls Varsity Volleyball team participated in a tournament held at Martin Luther High School. The Lady Eagles entered this tournament with high expectations and would settle for nothing but the best. In a series of short scrimmages the Eagles came out first in their pool. They then played a challenging match against the second place team of pool number 2. By playing as a team and working together the Lady Eagles won the match and moved on to the championship. The championship game was played against the host of the tournament themselves, Martin Luther High School, this game was the best game of the day by far, with both teams giving it only their best. With great serves by Ladies Eagles team: Amanda, beautiful spikes by Karas and Amanda, great sets by Jennifer and Natalia , and awesome passes by the whole team, under the amazing leadership of Coach Wong the Lady Eagles came out victorious as the CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!

Special awards given out were:  All Conference: Amanda R, Jennifer H. and Amanda P.

Even in this economy there are still those who will sacrifice and give because they see the value in investing in children and they see the value in increasing the technology in the classrooms! Truly our students are our investment in the future! So with that we say thank you to the local businesses and parents below for donating to our auctions.  Amazingly in this economy  our 2009 Auctions raised $4,000! Which will go directly into the class rooms increasing technology through the purchase of LCD projectors. Mr. Marko was the best!

Thank you also to our parents for supporting our auctions through bidding on items! We had a lot of fun and it is exciting to see the community at large standing by Evangel Christian School and investing in our students!
