Let’s Read

It is hard to believe that our 2010-11 school year is drawing to an end. This year I had the privilege of working with students in 1-4th grade who needed additional reading support besides their classroom instruction using a research based reading intervention program called My Sidewalks, five days a week. My Sidewalks provided instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills and strategies. Not only were theses skills strengthen but I was able to witness my students relax, gain confidence and believe that they can read as they learned to apply themselves and practiced reading daily. This summer students are challenged to read daily to improve their reading fluency and meet their reading speed goal for their specific grade.

Congratulations

On Tuesday, June 21st the kindergartners participated in their kindergarten graduation exercise. They all looked adorable in their light blue and pink cap & gowns. Family and friends were glowing with pride as they watched these precious graduates sing Yes You Can and recite 14 Bible verses. It was also quite moving to me because seven of the future first graders completed the Scott Foresman Early Reading Intervention program. In September all seven students were not able to identify the letters and sounds and now nine months later are able to read 10 storybooks independently. I am so impressed how they have grown. Learning to read is a huge accomplishment. As their graduation song stated Yes ,You Can accomplish whatever you endeavor with lots of hard work and the Lord on your side.

Old Mc Donald had a Farm

We each had an opportunity to create a paper model of a small family farm. This project was a great way to end our school year in Math. We had fun purchasing road pieces, farm houses, barns and animals and more.

Geometry Fun!

What Shape Will Your Bubble Be? First graders experimented with bubbles. We constructed a bubble maker using straws and string and each of us soaked them into a bubble solution. Does their 3-D bubble shape match their bubble maker? Why or Why not? Then we ended the lesson by blowing bubbles with straws! Our room smelled and looked so clean.

Congratulations

Everybody’s favorite month is June. It is the last month of school, the weather is warmer, and for many it is graduation time. This is true for kindergarten, they have the chance to have their graduation and celebrate their many accomplishments throughout the year. But before their graduation, kindergarten had the privilege of going bowling as their end of the year trip. It was a great time for everybody, we all had fun and were able to spend some time playing and enjoying each other’s company. As I mentioned above, kindergarten had their graduation. All the students looked great in their cap and gowns and they all sang and recited their bible verses wonderfully. But the best thing was seeing the proud faces of each of their parents. Congratulations class of 2011! I will miss you all!

Give your worries to God

KT also had the opportunity to participate during chapel. Mrs. Torres shared how if we keep our worries to ourselves, we only get tied up and are not able to do anything. But when we seek God first all the time, even in the middle of problems, He will help us. Then KT said a verse for everybody.

Jog-A-Thon

May was a busy but fun month. The students had their annual Jog-A-Thon. They love to go to Astoria Park and run, and they all did a great job. Congratulations to those students who had the most laps!

The Tea Bag

April was a short month because we were off for our Easter break. But before that we had our spiritual emphasis week, where we were able to focus and discuss why we celebrate Easter. We had some interesting discussions and all of the students made some arts and crafts. We also had a beautiful chapel with all of elementary where all the students worshipped God and learned about him through a great illustration of a tea bag.

Solar System

During the month of March we had our yearly Academic Fair, where all the students focus on a subject matter, and create a project. Our class did the Solar System. But before the Academic Fair we took a trip to the American Museum of Natural History. We were able to see and learn about our solar system. They all had a lot of fun! At the academic fair KT performed for all the parents a small skit about the planets. They all created a costume of a planet and then got dressed up and performed an awesome skit that we all enjoyed. All the parents were very proud and happy.

100th Day

We got to celebrate our 100th day of school. We read a book about the 100th day and watched a video. Finally, the students had the opportunity of creating their own art work using 100 macaronis. They all did a great job!
