Sale Price

Just when we thought we were finished with fractions. Now we are converting fractions into decimals and percents. How much is that DSI in the window? How much would it be with 25%, 35% or would you want it to be 50% off the regular price? 5E learned to estimate and calculate using scientific calculators. After these series of lessons several students said that when they go shopping they are going to make sure they are getting a sale.

Cool

We learned about the history of purses and that purses we first made for men then later became a fashion statement for woman. We also had a pet snake named Egypt visit and learned about the nature of snakes. Did you know that there was a war over chocolate? We learned that there was and that’s what made it wanted by other countries. Hey I cannot forget the live spider and his project. This student actually feed the spider a cricket triple its size. It took a couple of days but the spider tied its legs and hung the cricket out to dry. As in the famous words of a fifth grader -gross but quite interesting!

What are you reading?

Our story line up is quite interesting. In the advanced reading crew we are learning how to determine the author’s purpose for writing. We learned this with a simple activity. I had some magazines and newspapers and handed them out. The students had to find something they found interesting or something they liked to read. We determined that the brochures and advertisements were for the reader to be influenced to buy something. The cartoon section of the newspaper was for entertainment and so was the listing of movies and the sports section. Some magazines want to bring awareness of things and some are for mere enjoyment. Now we know why there are so many different authors with many different views.

Imagine

5E entered a writing contest and some of the students won. This was tied into a lesson that taught the students how to use our imaginations. They had to write in descriptive language for the purpose of taking our reading audience into our imaginary world. Great Job 5th grade.

Tasty Experiments

In one of our hands on lessons, we learned about molecules. 5E made chemical components out of marshmallows and toothpicks. This was a tempting lab because as 5E stated, they smell so good. They had to resist temptation and through this lesson they learned that a great scientist never samples their experiment. In light of the truth, they were rewarded with marshmallows at the end of the lab for not eating their experiments.

Fractions

Who ever thought we could have so much fun with a one inch strip of paper. Our hands on lesson help us to divide that strip into halves, fourths, eights and sixteenths. We were able to compare and came to the conclusion that the smaller the denominator the bigger the piece of pizza. The bigger the denominator the smaller the piece of pizza. 5E determined that they would rather have a half of pizza than a forth.

Elementary and Middle School students worked long and hard to prepare for Evangel Christian School’s annual Speech Meet. Students selected various forms of speech such as Bible scripture or a poem to recite. They were judged on how well they present their piece using just their voices to convey the feeling of their work.

Evangel congratulates all of the students who participated.

The Easter Story

Every Friday during our reading intervention sessions students in grade 1-3rd take a sentence reading assessment, which entails weekly phonics skills, high-frequency words and the vocabulary words of the week. Students who complete their daily reading and homework assignments do very well.

On April 1st, the last day before beginning our Easter recess and after we completed our sentence reading assessment the students enjoyed reviewing the Easter story using the resurrection eggs. Each egg had a small item; a donkey which reminded them of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and 11 other items representing the Easter story. In addition to using the resurrection eggs, the students learned that years ago during the Lent season people made a bread that would remind them that they should pray. Each student was given a home-made chocolate pretzel to observe how the dough was shaped like arms that cross the heart in prayer. After making this observation and discussing the importance of prayer we also enjoyed the chocolate covered treat. So, whenever you see a pretzel think of it’s origin and remember the importance of prayer. Especially during Lent when we recall the forty days Jesus spent in the desert, fasting and becoming strong as he thought deeply about fulfilling His mission on this earth.

Creations of Transportation

Wow the class is starting to look like a construction zone. I have K’Nex, Lego’s and a lot of modeling clay around the room. Roller coasters, bridges, towers, and all sorts of projects are being created. Middle school is working on making a bridge and also towering towers. One of the towers is 4.5 feet tall and another tower is almost 5 feet tall. The roller coaster is almost ready for its first run. Creations of transportation and electronics are finished. God is good and has blessed all in the class with great imaginations. I am ready to see what comes from the students next month.
