This week in Math we are learning all about remainders. We are realizing that a lot of times when we divide something, we can do a lot with what we have left over (besides throwing it away). We can break it up into fractions (like with a cookie), we can exchange it for coins (like when we work with money), and much more!

This month students will be working on Valentine’s Day projects. Elementary will be making Valentines Day cards, necklaces and picture frames for their loved ones. Studenare reminded that the greatest act of love took place on the cross!
Elementary is learning to play ABC on our recorders. We are also learning to conduct in 4/4, 3/4 and 2/4 time. This helps us feel the beat and helps us learn to lead.

1c has been exploring lobsters! We have been learning some very interesting details about these crustaceans. After we examined and discussed these creatures we put our thinking to work through drawings, number sentences and words, as we solved Lobster Picture Problems in groups and individually
After reading the story City Green, which was about a little girl helping to turn a vacant city lot into a neighborhood garden, reading lab students started their own flower garden in room 204. I am pleased to tell you our flowers are starting to grow. The students are very excited to see the green stems and leaves popping out of the soil.

The students in second grade enjoyed the story “The Bremen Town Musicians”. They learned that the animals had something to offer even though their owners wanted to get rid of them. They put together their talents and they formed a musical band. Inspite of our faults, we have unique gifts that God has given us. We are special in His eyes.

Class 4-L is reading biographies, which is the theme for their academic fair. I am excited to see the wonderful array of characters that they are studying. They are having a wonderful time and I love to see how they enjoy reading.

Third grade is continuing to enjoy their time in the library. For the month of January they are borrowing Geography books that deal with their academic fair projects. They are borrowing books on different countries since their projects are on a country study. They can still borrow one book of their own special interest.

It’s back to work again in 5E, but not before sharing that our Healthy Eating recipe book has done it again. As you know we are the Grand prizewinners in the PBS Produce for Kids contest. We were also blessed with the honor of being in the newspaper. I know that we never thought we would make it to a news story inside the periodical “The Gazette.” This lesson really hit home in 5E. Many of the students are eating more fruits and vegetables. We have learned that eating healthy is important. Some kids have even made a resolution to eat better for 2009. We created a contest to pick the best cover for our recipe book. We are excited about publishing our recipe book!
