I am very happy to be back for another great year at Evangel. This year we have a brand new Bible curriculum called Building Life Castles. During this week’s lessons we learned about the life of Christ, from His birth on Earth to the beginning of His ministry. The children learned that just as He grew in stature and wisdom so can they as they continue to draw closer to Him. We enjoyed numerous worship songs, were blessed with our prayers for each other, and played exciting Bible drill games to help us memorize scripture about true Godly love.

Last week we really had a great time seeing what happens to active yeast in our science lesson. Our math lesson involved coin tossing and collecting data as well as probability. Our highlight of the week was our competitive review game – boys VS girls. All of the students reviewed what was going to be on the quiz. This week we are creating a greenhouse to find out what the life cycle of an onion is, and learn about photosynthesis.

God Bless You! My name is Mrs. Ermestica, and I am your child’s 5th grade teacher. There are many great upcoming events and activities that I am excited about this year. Just to mention a little about myself, this is my first year at Evangel and I am so joyful that God has welcomed me into this great school and Christian family. Although it is my first year at Evangel, I have been teaching for seven years and have taught classes from Pre-K 3 through 8th grades.

The third grade class reading group had to read the story “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.” The story takes place in a town where it rained food for breakfast, lunch, dinner. When it rained, it also rained juice or milk. The reading class loved the story. They made their own menus including breakfast, lunch and dinner. They made it rain toast, juice, hamburgers and all kinds of food. One student even made a menu that included prices. They had so much fun creating!

For the first weeks of Kindergarten KV has been busy getting to know each other and exploring their new classroom. These past weeks we have been establishing routines, exploring and sorting various shapes, learning about letters L, O, and G, and creating our first word LOG. Kindergarten is also very excited to be on the second floor and having their lunch in the school cafeteria for the first time as a class this year.

September is one of my favorite months of the year. Some obvious reasons why, might be because I get to see my returning students, I get to meet new ones, and I get to set the tone for the rest of the year. These are among the main reasons I anticipate the start of the school year, but there is yet another reason I like September. And that reason is the “Fitness Test.” The Fitness Test is a New York State Test that measures student’s muscular strength and endurance. For one week, students have “Fitness Test Training,” where they are given a card with specific workouts and are expected to complete that card by the end of the class. For many students this card is an immovable mountain. They see what I expect of them and say, “Mr. Wong are you serious? Mr. Wong this is a joke right? Mr. Wong you’re a funny guy?” The truth is that I do have high expectations of my students and I take pride in pushing them further then they believed they could go. The conversations for the next couple of days are as follows, “I’m so sore, how about you? I cannot believe I actually finished ever thing on that card. Mr. Wong I have not worked out like that in months.” Little do they know that that’s music to my ears. It is not until the following week that they begin to realize the fruits of their labor. They understand why they were pushed so hard and how easy the Fitness Test actually is.

In September the Second grade really enjoyed making beetles for math class. The paper beetles were a way for the students to share about themselves and their families. For example, the dots represented their birthdays and the stripes represented how many people live in their home. They learned how to spell new words and in Science they discovered how to sort animals. Second Grade also enjoyed making predictions in the stories they were reading.

To end the year, we went on a trip to Green Meadows Farm in Bayside. We had a blast! Not only did we get to learn about different cultures, but we also got to see different animals. The highlight of the trip was chasing after the chickens. What a day!

Math became more fun playing with the many manipulatives. It was astonishing to see the student’s excitement when they got to see and feel and touch toy bugs to do addition and subtraction. They had so much fun doing “Bugs in the Garden” and making their won Math problems.
