Both upper elementary classes have been borrowing two books per student on a weekly basis. We have been enjoying the book “The Landry News” by Andrew Clements as a story time together. Then they respond to the reading and we share each other’s opinions. We have also begun writing newspaper articles like the main character in the story. We are enjoying our time in the library.

We are beginning a Unit titled Doing the Right Thing. We are talking about kindness and how being kind is doing something for someone without expecting anything in return. We will read about different charities that show kindness to children with terminal illness. One organization named Locks of Love makes hairpieces for children who have lost their hair due to cancer. I explained to the students that I have donated my hair to Locks of Love before and am planning on doing it again in the near future. One student also has donated her hair in the past as well. It is exciting to see that even at a young age you can show kindness to others around you.

“Bring Your Favorite Stuffed Animal to School Day!”

What better way to enjoy school than with your favorite furry friend?  That’s exactly what students in grades Pre-K3 through 5th got to do on Tuesday, September 29.  Students and teachers were encouraged to bring their most beloved friend to show off during the day.  Children excitedly placed their favorite animals on their desks as they worked hard throughout the day.  “Bring Your Favorite Stuffed Animal to School Day!” – just another way we get to know each other a little bit better here at Evangel Christian School!  Check out the cute and cuddly pictures in the gallery section of our website!

Grammar: Last year 5E sang their prepositions. This year 5E will rock the verbs with our new hit “Verbs will, verbs will, rock you.” It goes to the beat of the song we will rock you and sings like this – Helping verbs in your face. You learn them with grace. You see them in grammar all over the place.

Math Bridges: We may not be able to build the Wall of China but we did build the Great Wall of Base Ten. We all collaborated in cutting base Ten Squares to build a wall that measures 1,000,000 centimeter square. Basically we learned the formula for the area of a square which is a = l x w.

Welcome to 5E. I hope you had restful summer. We have a lot of great things for this up coming year. To begin with make sure you read all about it in our class project “All About Me”, on our bulletin board. We tell all about our favorite hobbies and ourselves.

Elementary grades are learning how to draw, not just how to draw but how to break down a picture by starting with shapes. For example they were asked to copy a drawing of a farm (animals included). Once they drew the picture their way they were shown how to draw more effectively by drawing the shapes within each animal first, then moving on to details. The second time they were given a different picture to copy and were much more successful in getting it accurate.

They also Decoupage their art folders with colorful pieces of paper and magazine cut outs.
