This month we are talking about wining your race. Every one who competes in Olympic games must enter strict training. We are training in the Word and allowing God to develop character in us. It has been exciting to see 6th grade respond to God as they learn how to win their race.

Last week students rehearsed the fall skit, “The Telltale Talent.” It is a humorous, Christian spoof on Edgar Allen Poe’s haunting poem “The Telltale Heart.” As they practice, students are working on characterization and voice projection, as well as learning a valuable lesson: God gives us our talents and expects us to put them to good use!

We have been discussing key elements in reading. We have covered Main Idea, Finding Details, Comparing and Contrasting as well as Cause and Effect. While we were discussing comparing and contrasting I had each student put their foot up on the table and we compared our footwear. Although there were many similarities, such as color, laces, or brand, there were also many differences. I explained that you can take 2 items and compare them. The students are also beginning to connect the concepts they are learning in reading and implementing them in other subjects.

While reading the story Rain Rain Go Away, the students were puzzled by the family in the story who was so consumed with the weather. At the slightest chance of rain the family would go inside and hide. When they poured a glass of water they made sure that no water touched them. It wasn’t until the end of the story that we found out the family was made of sugar and dissolved when they got wet. Everything made sense at the end of the story. Sometimes you can’t judge a book by its cover you have to read it to the end.

In 7th grade math, we are discussing operations on fractions. The students have impressed me with how quickly they are catching on to this challenging material. I have let several of them try out my new SMART board, which is a great tool in the classroom.

Greetings again from the Middle School and High School Resource Room!

We just finished “Back-to-School Night” for both middle and high school and I had a great time meeting both new and old parents. It looks like Resource is on it’s way to working at facilitating team effort between teacher, parent and student. The parents I met are active in their child’s education and will be a great mix of help, accountability and encouragement to them. The time with them was both informative and important for student success. Our concentration with the students this month is on self-management and productivity in class. Note taking skills are revisited and expounded on to improve student notes as a tool for studying for tests. We have a lot to look forward to as God’s plan for each student unfolds.

Fitness Workouts and Circuit Training

September has been a month dedicated to fitness workouts. Students began their second week of P.E. with circuit training, where they went through various stations such as pushups, sit ups, hurdles, cones, wall squats, etc. Students not only learned the proper way to exercise, but they began to realize why exercising is so important in their daily lives.
