Seventh graders practiced using the 10 SAT Vocabulary words in their own sentences. Students also orally presented their “Shoebox Speeches.” Each student showed 10 items and explained the personal importance of the item. Students were graded on volume, clarity, eye contact, length of time (2-3 minutes), and content (reasons).

Sixth grade students received their first list of 10 spelling words and 5 SAT Vocabulary words and definitions. Students also wrote final drafts of their acrostic poems and orally presented them to the class, along with 3 props.

This week’s Do Now focus was on Main Idea. Students read and wrote down a short paragraph and underlined the topic sentence. In the SRA booklets, students read a practice story called “Mother Jones” and answered comprehension and word study questions. They practiced self-grading and scoring as well. The “Lady Liberty” SRA story was finished and then students chose their own story at their personal reading level in the SRA Kit. They answered comprehension and word study questions. For homework, students read “Whale Watch” in Taking the High Road and completed questions.

This week, students were given their first set of ten SAT Vocabulary words and definitions. Students then completed sentences using the ten words correctly. “Shoebox Speech” guidelines and requirements were given out and explained. I also performed live my own speech as an example to the class. Students created a Speech Outline listing their own ten items and two reasons for each item. Finally, students completed the Procedures Test based on the expectations and routines in my classroom.

This week, for “Do Now’s,” students practiced their cursive handwriting for completion grades. Students also wrote a rough draft acrostic poem using the letters of their name to create phrases that describe themselves. Finally, students took the Procedures Test based on the expectations and routines in my classroom.

Eighth graders reviewed and practiced usage of the SRA Reading Kits. They completed two, three-minute pre-tests to be placed at their personal, reading ability level. In addition, students completed the first story in the Taking the High Road workbook for a completion grade, and they were taught a new game called “Sparkle.”

Students took two, three minute pre-tests in their SRA Reading Booklets in order to be placed at their personal, reading ability level. Then, students read a short story called “Lady Liberty” to practice completing SRA story assignments.
