Reading Class

For the week of October 19-23, students finished up the Population Bar Graph, which was an extension of the story, The All-American Slurp. Then we began reading the novel Old Yeller by Fred Gipson. We had a wonderful discussion about stereotyping as a pre-reading activity, due to some of the stereotypes about Indians and women seen in the novel. Finally, we discussed the setting, characters, and key events/conversations of chapters one and two.

English Class

For the week of October 19-23, students chose an object to bring to class to describe. Students filled in a brainstorming chart with as many adjectives as possible, using the five senses. Next, students wrote two similes. Finally, they used their chart and similes to write a full paragraph describing their object.

The All-American Slurp

During the week of October 13-16, we reviewed and discussed the story, The All-American Slurp, involving two families, one Chinese and one American. Students completed a test on the story and then began a population bar graph as an extension of the story. Students learned about the overcrowding problem in China and their one-child policy. Students compared their population with several other countries.

Fun In English

This week, students learned about some of the different types of paragraphs: narrative, expository, descriptive, and persuasive. After I shared my own childhood memory narrative, students wrote and shared their own. We also played a game as an introduction to description: one student was blindfolded and an object was revealed to the rest of the class. Using adjectives only, the class had to try to help their blindfolded classmate guess the object.

Sparkle

In the beginning of October, students learned about compound subjects and compound objects of the preposition. They had to identify them in context in their Easy Grammar workbooks. We also played “Sparkle” to review for the Spelling & Vocab. quiz.

Art Class

Students were shown a power point on Picasso and we discussed the two main techniques he used when painting portraits. Students then recreated one of his pieces using watercolor pencils and paint. They did such an awesome job incorporating their own style while keeping it within the guidelines of Picasso that I was pleasantly surprised.

Enrichment Class

Researching, writing, and thinking… oh my. Every class is learning a lot of information about each groups “technology.” The students will be researching their technology in the areas of history and current technology. The groups will be writing interesting paragraphs to further finish their projects. After that, the teams will continue on to the areas of breakthroughs and consequences. Each student is thinking of ways to further their project into a thing worthy of each persons ability. Here’s a fun and easy riddle: What is it that someone has to take before you can get it? … The answer is: Your picture.
