Salt-Dough Maps

We studied the Geography and culture of the Ancient and Modern Middle East. We learned about the three religions that began in the Middle East, as well as the many resources the Middle East continues to contribute to the world. We made salt-dough maps to show the difference in topography between the Arabian Peninsula, the Fertile Crescent, and the Northern Plateau Region.

Protists and Fungi

Last month lead us into the kingdom of Protists and Fungi. In this section we took a close look at different single-celled organisms called Protists, a famous one being the amoeba. The simplest of life is found in the Protists and Fungi kingdom. At this microscopic end of the chain of life you find bacteria on the furthest link, and just passed it, viruses. We are currently reviewing the bacterial and viral diseases, their symptoms, and the current fight for life in the field of medicine.

Lets Look At Cells

In class we looked at plant cells through a compound light microscope and learned that every living thing is made up of tiny organisms called cells. During the first month we compared animal cells with plant cells, and learned the main differences between them. We got to talk a little about photosynthetic organisms and how they differ from animals. We learned about mitosis and osmosis, diffusion and differentiation. In class we had a demonstration of how water, through the process of osmosis and diffusion, slowly changed a raisin back into a grape! All of these topics have to do with the cell’s life cycle, how it behaves in nature, and how it affects us.

Middle School Music

Students in middle school have now played their first song on the guitar and have begun learning their first two chords. This month, students have focused on the “G” and “D” chord. In the midst of learning to play the guitar, they have also started learning their song for the Christmas program. Each class is learning how melody and harmony work together in producing a nice sound.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar once said, “One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team.” Teamwork is just one lesson that our students need to learn in order to become successful in life. Whether they go on to become a professional athlete, doctor, lawyer, business man, teacher, etc, they need to learn how to get along and work side by side with their peers despite their differences. Through sports, students learn that they are just one part of a whole and in order for the team to function they all need to contribute.

This month we are talking about wining your race. Every one who competes in Olympic games must enter strict training. We are training in the Word and allowing God to develop character in us. It has been exciting to see 6th grade respond to God as they learn how to win their race.

While reading the story Rain Rain Go Away, the students were puzzled by the family in the story who was so consumed with the weather. At the slightest chance of rain the family would go inside and hide. When they poured a glass of water they made sure that no water touched them. It wasn’t until the end of the story that we found out the family was made of sugar and dissolved when they got wet. Everything made sense at the end of the story. Sometimes you can’t judge a book by its cover you have to read it to the end.

Greetings again from the Middle School and High School Resource Room!

We just finished “Back-to-School Night” for both middle and high school and I had a great time meeting both new and old parents. It looks like Resource is on it’s way to working at facilitating team effort between teacher, parent and student. The parents I met are active in their child’s education and will be a great mix of help, accountability and encouragement to them. The time with them was both informative and important for student success. Our concentration with the students this month is on self-management and productivity in class. Note taking skills are revisited and expounded on to improve student notes as a tool for studying for tests. We have a lot to look forward to as God’s plan for each student unfolds.
