The sixth graders are diving deep into the Earth in our current unit about “The Changing Earth.” So far the students have discovered why the tectonic plates move and how mountains form. They are currently working through a project where they are constructing the Earth’s surface (with an apple) to observe the different layers of Earth and how each layer can be affected. As the young scientists have already studied volcanoes as a form of mountain building, they will soon dig deeper to understand what actually happens inside a volcano! Get ready!

The sixth grade had the privilege of going on a ministry trip to the Lower East Side of Manhattan where they shared cards, sang and visited in a nursing home. They were able to sing and visit with each floor in the home. After we finished visiting, students had lunch and a time of sharing about their experience at the nursing home. There were some great stories shared of how people they met that day reminded them of people or family members in their own lives. The stories brought about tears and thankfulness. Students came back saying how blessed they were and thankful for all they had.

During Thanksgiving week our school had many celebrations that included food and lots of fun. Fourth and Fifth grade had truly traditional Feasts. Students dressed as Pilgrims and Indians, gave thanks, and ate lots and lots of yummy food. Middle School and High School had huge feasts in the Fellowship Hall. There was a bounty of food, talent, and giving of thanks to the Lord for His many blessings. A great time was had by all. Make sure to “check out” galleries for lots of great pics.
Our Middle School Program called “Love, Joy and Peace” took place on Monday, December 15, 1008 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. What an awesome time we had.Jesus was honored in many ways on Monday night. Traditional Christmas Carols lifted His Name. Poems about love, joy and peace were written by Middle Schoolers and read during the program. There was an extremely touching drama performed about to the song “Agnus Dei”. The students worked hard and God was glorified and lifted up.

The students are currently reading three books from The Chronicles of Narnia series (The Last Battle, The Magician’s Nephew, and The Silver Chair). We are exploring the themes C. L. Lewis used to show a connection between Jesus’ work on the cross and the characters used to represent the different aspects of Christianity. As we prepare for our Christmas break, we will wind down our reading classes looking at clips from the movies The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian.

It’s an exciting month for 6R, 6S, 7L, 7P, and 8C. We will continue studying writing personal and business letters. In an effort to bring what the students learn from the classroom to the outside world, the students will be sending holiday cards and letters to soldiers serving oversees. If you would like to join us in our blessing of those who are away from their family during this season, please do so by visiting the website: http://www.anysoldier.com. The students will also be using the computer lab to find official contact addresses for their favorite businesses. They will then type and mail out a business letter telling the company what they love about their products. May the Lord bless you this Christmas. Happy 2009!

In November we will be learning many new and exciting things in Spanish. We will begin by learning the names of school supplies used for studying in class and at home. The class will be able to identify them and know the proper Spanish translation. We are also going to learn about the clothes we wear, what they are called and how we can buy them at your local store. To better understand the lessons, the children will be participating in hands on activities such as: skits, projects and class conversations.
