The Big Apple of His Eye
Welcome back! We are excited to have many new international students this year. We talked about all the different cities we came from and learned expressions to describe a place. We also worked on putting together a bulletin board with words to describe NYC. The title of our board is The Big Apple of His Eye, and we have words such as busy, friendly, fantastic, and multicultural! We’re doing a lot of speaking practice, and I look forward to seeing improvement throughout the year!

Let’s Get Organized
Resource Room is in full swing as we continue to teach the students writing and study management skills helpful toward success. The students are learning how to use Edline printouts of their classes to evaluate how they are performing in each class. They also use it to track late homework that either needs to be turned in or finished. International week provided a wonderful platform from which to use graphic organizers. Both middle school and high school had so much to offer that we could make three-circle Venn diagrams. These diagrams were at first intimidating, but, working together, the students learned how easy it was to use them to compare and contrast different countries that were studied. In the end, we learned that we are united in Christ. Our hallway bulletin board will soon read not only, Be confident… in Christ but also Be unified… in Christ.
Mountain Pathways
We have continued to read selections from Mountain Pathways, our reading textbook. We have focused on three stories: The Beginning of the Armadillos, a story which we enjoyed very much, Pony Penning Day, and, lastly, The Renegade Husky. This last story has been a great enjoyment to us. We spoke about animal cruelty and the reasons for it, and, in the process, read this wonderful story about this mistreated husky that found love and respect from a young boy named Rick.

Family Tree
The students are working hard in Spanish class. They created their first project of a Family Tree. I really got to learn many things about my students and their families. The students were proud to show of their extensive families and many got very creative with their project. Thank you to all the students and their families.

Seeing the story
We have been finishing up the novel, The Magician’s Nephew. Through art, students will draw a scene that depicts one of the themes of the story.

What FUN to travel!
Seventh graders chose a city and wrote an essay about why they’d like to travel there over any other city in the world. They enjoyed finding beautiful pictures of landscapes, buildings, monuments, etc.

A Narnia Adventure
We’re currently reading one of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books: The Magician’s Nephew. Students are discovering the unique powers of the green and yellow rings created by Uncle Andrew, and they’re also following the children, Digory and Polly, through their crazy ride through worlds.

Art and English
One of the best ways to remember tough words is to SEE it. Students chose one of their new spelling or vocabulary words and illustrated it on a 5×7 index card. They always love viewing each other’s artwork.

Mavis Beacon
We have just started their fall typing unit. We are currently taking a fall speed test and will be working on improving their typing skills for several weeks. We are working mostly in Mavis Beacon, though 1st and 2nd Grade are getting to use Word pad as well.
