Music Vocabulary
Students have been working hard on their music vocabulary. We have used various lessons to learn what exactly they are looking at when they are reading music. We have even made it a competition where students work together in groups to figure out what the musical terms are and what they mean.

Learning the Guitar
Students have been focusing on worship music. Throughout the year, they have been learning guitar. They now know enough to begin to play worship songs with chords. They played “I Am Free,” for their first worship song test. They are doing great and there have been about 5 students taking lessons privately as they want to play on the worship team next year.

Celebrating God’s Goodness
This year’s Spring Celebration took place on Monday, May24th and was a mixture of Elementary, Middle and High School students. Students performed skits, dramas, songs, and dances unto the Lord. What a great celebration it was and everyone was blessed – even the performers. Thanks to all for working so hard and glorifying God with the use of our talents.

NFL Running Back Blesses Evangel
Former Running Back, Lee Rouson, a two time Super Bowl Winner with the New York Giants was a guest speaker at our Middle School and High School Chapels. Lee shared his journey of faith and overcoming hardships. THrough it all, Lee remained faithful to the call of God in His life. Our students were inspired by his story of Hope and Triumph in Christ. Lee also emphasized that eventhough he has been tremendously successful, he identifies himself as a child of God and gives all the glory to Him. Mr. Rouson has been anexample to our children that “With God all things are possible.” We are so thankful to him for taking time out of his busy schedule to come and speak with our students.

Martin Luther King, Jr.
In celebration of a man who helped changed our outlook of equality and what it entails, students were split into groups of two. After choosing a quote from a bowl they had to discuss what they believed the quote meant and had to make a visual of the quote. The Poster had to include both the quote and a visual representation of the quote. This exercise helps students use symbolism, learn from each others view points (as some of the translations of the quotes differed) and to reflect on how Martin Luther King Jr. had a major impact on the world we live in today.

To Speak Or Not To Speak
On April 30, 2010, Samantha Byrne (8th), Angelie Cesario (8th), Jerry Meng (7th), and Kristina Papacostas (8th) represented Evangel Christian School at the annual Association of Christian Schools International Junior High Speech Meet. These four students worked hard to memorize works from the Dramatic Reading, Dramatic Poetry, or Humorous Reading categories. There were two rounds with different judges the students had to recite their pieces to, using only their voice and emotion to convey the author’s thoughts. Each of our students brought home a rating of “Good” and was awarded with a ribbon and certificates and the awards ceremony. We are so proud of our Speech Meet Team and look forward to continuing to build it up and enter more categories in the future!
Young Illustrators
We have begun using recipes4success.com regularly. Our first set of activities was a series of tutorials in Twist, the kid friendly version of Adobe Illustrator. The kids have loved using it and many of them have had their incredible work posted here. In the lab, we are also developing our keyboarding skills and learning about other software, such as Powerpoint and the rest of the Microsoft office suite.

Bake Sale
On Thursday, April 15th, the National Junior Honor Society held its second bake sale. NJHS chose the NY Foundling, a NYC foster care agency, as the service project for the 2009-2010 academic school year. Our treasurer, an 8th grader, was adopted and suggested we raise money for foster children, and the members of NJHS supported this idea whole-heartedly. A great surprise was a Hershey’s fondue set that was brought in. The students made “fruit kabobs” and offered a non-chocolate version for a healthy food option that was appreciated by the staff! We pray that in the remaining school months we will reach our goal of a total amount of $500.00. Our April 15th sale raised over $100.00! Check out the photo gallery from some fun pictures from our sale.
Mrs. Candelier
Elementary and Middle School students worked long and hard to prepare for Evangel Christian School’s annual Speech Meet. Students selected various forms of speech such as Bible scripture or a poem to recite. They were judged on how well they present their piece using just their voices to convey the feeling of their work.
Evangel congratulates all of the students who participated.
