Sparkle

In the beginning of October, students learned about compound subjects, helping verbs, and infinitives. They had to identify them in context in their Easy Grammar workbooks. We also played “Sparkle” to review for the Spelling & Vocab. quiz.

Paint Like Picasso

Students were shown a power point on Picasso and not only did we discuss the two main techniques he used but they also came to my third point on their own (all of Picasso’s portraits besides the one of himself were of women). Every portrait he painted was a picture of a women that was close to him

A close-up photo was taken of each student; I allowed them to decided how the photo was taken (side profile, front view, covering one eye, mouth open, etc.) I then printed out their pictures and they were asked to create their own self portrait in Tempera paint using Picasso’s techniques. They are currently working on this now. It is going to be veryinteresting to see their final products.

Enrichment Class

Researching, writing, and thinking… oh my. Every class is learning a lot of information about each groups “technology.” The students will be researching their technology in the areas of history and current technology. The groups will be writing interesting paragraphs to further finish their projects. After that, the teams will continue on to the areas of breakthroughs and consequences. Each student is thinking of ways to further their project into a thing worthy of each persons ability. Here’s a fun and easy riddle: What is it that someone has to take before you can get it? … The answer is: Your picture.

The New World

We studied the coming of the European Explorers and Conquistadors to the Americas. We explored what was happening in Europe at that time that drove people to explore other lands. As the Renaissance flourished, so did technology, which led to better maps and ships, which led to easier sea-voyages. Also, the desire for resources in Asia drove Europeans to look for better, faster trade routes to India and China. Once the Americas became known, Europeans hoped to find resources there as well. The Reformation, which gave people a stronger desire for religious freedom, also drew colonists to the “New World.”

Early Native America

We studied early Native America, starting with the Bering land bridge, and watching how those cultures extended into North, Central, and South America. We tracked the progress of the Maya, Inca, and Aztecs, as they flourished into complex, advanced civilizations.

Candy Animal Cells

This month we have been analyzing life on a cellular level. Last month we learned that all of life is comprised of cells, now we are delving deeper and seeing what a cell is and what its function is. Last week we studied prokaryotic and eukaroytic cells This week we studied animal and plant cells and in class the kids made a 3-d animal cell out of candy!

Life Science

Our first month back to school was packed with so many interesting topics. We had a safety lab that was preparation for the upcoming labs that we will have this year. We started the year off introducing Life Science and the many different subcategories within Life Science. Our second section that we moved into was addressing the question of Life, what makes something alive and other things not alive? We discussed the six characteristics of living things and the way life was organized in the world around us.

Middle School Music

Students in middle school have now played their first song on the guitar and have begun learning their first two chords. This month, students have focused on the “G” and “D” chord. In the midst of learning to play the guitar, they have also started learning their song for the Christmas program. Each class is learning how melody and harmony work together in producing a nice sound.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar once said, “One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team.” Teamwork is just one lesson that our students need to learn in order to become successful in life. Whether they go on to become a professional athlete, doctor, lawyer, business man, teacher, etc, they need to learn how to get along and work side by side with their peers despite their differences. Through sports, students learn that they are just one part of a whole and in order for the team to function they all need to contribute.
