Posters
We worked on Do’s and Don’ts posters this month. The students, in groups, picked a topic of their choice such as “Improving your English” then created posters and presented their thoughts. Some advice from the ESL classroom on improving your English! Do make friends who speak English. Learn the local culture. But don’t stress too much and never give up! All posters are displayed in the classroom. Here are other topics the students came up with: Getting Good Grades, Losing Weight, Building Good Friendships, and Staying Healthy.
Cultural Explosion!
We enjoyed a week of cultural exposure. We saw different costumes and traditional dress, tasted exotic foods from far away lands and learned about traditions. We also had new students place pins in our world map located on the first floor as people enter our building. This map represents all the countries our students come from – over 73 countries!

Rocks
Sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks are the make-up of the rocks of the earth. The rock cycle is a fascinating process of rock recycling. Who knew rocks could be so interesting!
Emotional Distress
Students have been learning through biblical characters such as Timothy, Absalom, and Abraham how to overcome emotional distress. We have had some great discussions.
Civil War
Students just completed a unit study of the Civil War and the reconstruction of the South. Students created banners that they would have carried if they had been in a parade after the Civil War was over. They also created political cartoons about the 13th Amendment, imagining they were African-Americans during Reconstruction. Students also created a speech about changes they would like to happen in America.
Pre-Algebra
We have been working on reviewing our basic math skills as we begin entering our algebra skills chapters. We have come up with a new way of thinking about math – a new math philosophy. It is – Algebra

Guitars
In 6th – 8th Grade Music, we have been learning the parts of the guitar, tuning the guitar, and learning how to hold the guitar. We have also practiced charting chords and fingering different chords. The class is learning chords for their 1st song. We are excited about starting to play songs.
The Big Apple of His Eye
Welcome back! We are excited to have many new international students this year. We talked about all the different cities we came from and learned expressions to describe a place. We also worked on putting together a bulletin board with words to describe NYC. The title of our board is The Big Apple of His Eye, and we have words such as busy, friendly, fantastic, and multicultural! We’re doing a lot of speaking practice, and I look forward to seeing improvement throughout the year!
