Geology
We started the year off with a lot of review from last year to get the kids back into science mode. We went over the different branches of science to show the overlapping relevance of each area of study. We quickly moved through the introduction week and started focusing on Geology. We went outside to show how a makeshift compass can get you to the magnetic north-pole, but we also learned that the magnetic north-pole is not the true geographic north-pole. The science of mapmaking as a form of model testing is heavily relied upon by many branches of geology; to name a few, meteorologists, oceanographers, and cartographers. The students made a map model of the school and some of the results were quite colorful!

Middle School Music
Students in middle school have now played their first song on the guitar and have begun learning their first two chords. This month, students have focused on the “G” and “D” chord. In the midst of learning to play the guitar, they have also started learning their song for the Christmas program. Each class is learning how melody and harmony work together in producing a nice sound.

ECS Spelling Bee
C-A-T. Okay, maybe the words weren’t quite that easy at Evangel Christian’s School Annual School Spelling Bee that took place on Friday, October 16th. In preparation for this rigorous event, students practiced for six weeks prior going over spelling rules and drilling themselves on appropriate grade-level words. We are proud to announce the following students will be attending the Associate of Christian School International’s (ACSI) District Spelling Bee taking place in Yonkers, New York on November 18:
Grade 5: Jennier Munoz (First place), Amber Colon (Runner-up), Matthew Alvarez (Alternate)
Grade 6: Christina DeArruda (First place), Trina Opao (Runner-Up), Stephanie Levy (Alternate)
Grade 7: Johannah Gepte (First place), Astroy Semple (Runner-Up), Jerry Meng (Alternate)
Congratulations to all our students who participated! See you at the district bee!
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar once said, “One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team.” Teamwork is just one lesson that our students need to learn in order to become successful in life. Whether they go on to become a professional athlete, doctor, lawyer, business man, teacher, etc, they need to learn how to get along and work side by side with their peers despite their differences. Through sports, students learn that they are just one part of a whole and in order for the team to function they all need to contribute.

Eighth grade is on a quest to discover how God used others through out history despite their flaws and hang-ups. This month the characters we will be studying are Peter and Nehemiah.

We have been discussing key elements in reading. We have covered Main Idea, Finding Details, Comparing and Contrasting as well as Cause and Effect. While we were discussing comparing and contrasting I had each student put their foot up on the table and we compared our footwear. Although there were many similarities, such as color, laces, or brand, there were also many differences. I explained that you can take 2 items and compare them. The students are also beginning to connect the concepts they are learning in reading and implementing them in other subjects.

Greetings again from the Middle School and High School Resource Room!
We just finished “Back-to-School Night” for both middle and high school and I had a great time meeting both new and old parents. It looks like Resource is on it’s way to working at facilitating team effort between teacher, parent and student. The parents I met are active in their child’s education and will be a great mix of help, accountability and encouragement to them. The time with them was both informative and important for student success. Our concentration with the students this month is on self-management and productivity in class. Note taking skills are revisited and expounded on to improve student notes as a tool for studying for tests. We have a lot to look forward to as God’s plan for each student unfolds.

Fitness Workouts and Circuit Training
September has been a month dedicated to fitness workouts. Students began their second week of P.E. with circuit training, where they went through various stations such as pushups, sit ups, hurdles, cones, wall squats, etc. Students not only learned the proper way to exercise, but they began to realize why exercising is so important in their daily lives.
