1930 vs 2011

Eighth graders stepped back in time to a 1930’s culture very different from our diverse, NYC present. Students caught a glimpse of the African American struggle through the Logan family in Mildred D. Taylor’s award-winning novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Students wrestled with questions about prejudice, revenge, and justice. Additionally, students discussed and debated the controversial issue of offshore outsourcing, as well as writing a research paper expressing their view.

Learning the guitar

The 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Music classes are not only progressing in tuning their guitar, but are also improving in switching from one chord to another. As they learn these techniques, which get easier with consistent practice, they are also slowly playing through songs. The songs we have been focusing on include: Forever, by Chris Tomlin; As The Deer; Your Grace Is Enough; and You Are My All In All. Check it out at WorshipArchive.com!

Extra work pays off

Students worked really hard with partners on the salsa routines that middle school preformed. They even stayed afterschool to work on it and practice. They did a fantastic job.

Extra Work

The students worked hard learning different types of dances with partners. The song they danced to was God is Good. It was a little challenging as it used hip hop with salsa moves, but they learned it. The students practiced during lunch time and during their gym time.

What is climate?

How does a person determine what the weather is going to be for the weekend? Why do meteorologists get the weather wrong? This April we discussed and answered these questions and many more concerning the climate.

Landslides

The greater the downward angle the more rapid rocks, trees, and land will flow down. Landslides are dangerous. We have been talking about the angles, the composition of the land, and even more disastrous is when the weather is inclement, or raining hard. We were able to see some videos of landslides that were devastating to the surrounding areas.

Water

With all the talk about water… the 8th grade learned about where the fresh water sources are on the earth… and in some cases under the surface of the earth. We have learned that NYC is on top of a natural aquifer. Humans dig wells into these aquifers to get their fresh water.

Erosion

Earth Science! We have learned about weathering and erosion of Earth this month. How can you have a destructive and powerful volcano reduced to a very small mound? Erosion of the softer parts of the volcano when it has become extinct or is no longer erupting. This is something that does not happen over a short time.
