Students are now working with percents and ratios. They continue to add on to the work they have already done with multi-step equations. Despite the frustration with the many steps to solve an equation, they seem to be grasping the concept. It is a pleasure to watch their face when they finally “get it.”

We just tested on chapter 6, dealing with inequalities and graphing inequalities. We related inequalities to city blocks and choosing a subway station to walk to, as well as determining how much to work in order to earn a minimum amount of money. We are all very excited about midterms…

As the second quarter winds down, high school students have been busy in the computer lab. The activity ranges from writing papers for classes to last minute printing for assignments that are due. In computer lab, the students have been learning the ins and outs of Google Maps. Google Maps is a program developed by Google to assist people in looking at maps. The most common use of Google Maps is acquiring directions, but there is much more to the program. The student have learned how to use all the special features including the Street View setting which lets users see destinations as if they were standing on the street. Many students found it interesting to see their home or their favorite location around the city. Technology keeps improving and we strive to keep the students knowledge improving as well.

Evangel’s freshmen have wrapped up their study of A Christmas Carol and will begin investigating the elements of an in-depth literary analysis. They will, then, put their acquired knowledge to the test as they begin an exploratory journey through Ted Dekker’s Blink of an Eye. Students will also have the opportunity to have formal discussions of this fictional piece using the methods of Socratic discussion. There they will have the opportunity to see that “the future changes in the blink of an eye…or does it?” They’ll find out! Ask them about their discoveries! I’m sure they want to share!

This week our 9th graders will be studying how to “hold forth” the word in Bible class. According to Philippians 2:16, holding forth the word of life keeps us from “laboring in vain.” I’m excited to see the word of God taking root in each of our student’s lives!

Learning verb conjugations have been our toughest challenge this month, especially the imperfect past tense. The students were a little confused at first, but finally have gotten a good grasp of it. They are trying hard to use it in our classroom conversations. We have started reading the Psalms in Spanish aloud during our devotional time to get accustomed to hearing the language and practice listening skills.

The ninth grade right now is concluding a section on Africa. We have discussed its diverse and beautiful geography and how that has impacted its cultural history. As a class we watched a video, which discussed and illustrated all the various aspects we had discussed in class, giving a visual background to what the students had been studying. As we close out this half of the year, the students have greatly impressed me with their abilities to jump into high school history. We will move back to Asia after this section.

Happy New Year!
We look forward to a new year of hope – hope in the Lord and assurance that God has a perfect plan for each student.
January is an exciting time with new goals set for a new year and yet a difficult month with mid terms on the way, homework to stay on top of and the Academic Fair coming. In Resource Room we will be checking our goals and finding strategies with which we can realistically meet those goals. Now is the time for students, parents and teachers to truly work together as a team to help students set good goals and begin to achieve them. In I Corinthians 12: 24-27 the Bible says, “But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

For the past two months our 9th graders have been studying the foundations of their faith. We have discussed questions such as why is the Bible the inspirational word of God? How did we get our Bible? Where are the original manuscripts and can we believe them? These questions have sparked curiosity and interest into why we believe what we believe and how we can make it applicable. Our next lesson will cover the symbols of the bible such as a lamp and fire so the students will understand that the Bible is to instruct and guide them in this world. It has been a blessing to teach your children. My prayer for these students is that God will truly reveal Himself to them at a young age, so that they will have a firm foundation of their faith, which will ultimately prepare them for this world.
