This month we took a trip to a Spanish restaurant in Queens called “La Portena”.
The students were able to practice their vocabulary learned in class, since we are currently
studying a chapter called “El Restaurante”. The kids had a great time and the food was mucho gusto!!

During December we have enjoyed sharing our talents in Christmas programs that portrayed the true meaning of Christmas; we have found encouragement from secret angels; and have even enjoyed the first real snow of the season. Students can learn that they have the ability to bless others and can give the gift of themselves. James 1 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth that we might be a kind of first fruits of all He created”. I pray that the Christmas break brings many blessings to each family. We certainly have God’s goodness to look forward to in the New Year.

We are moving ahead into chapter 6 and graphing inequalities – sounds like so much fun! We have wrapped up chapter 5 and how to write and solve lines on a graph. We are on pace to be half way through the curriculum as we reach the midpoint of the school year.

Evangel’s freshmen are spending some time in Dickens’ London, traveling with Scrooge, of A Christmas Carol, as various Spirits escort him through his past, present, and future. Students will analyze Dickens’ characterization of Scrooge and his ability to convey the theme of redemption. Students will also be creating their very own Dickens dictionaries!

In Global class the 9th graders have been discussing Muslim civilization. This has been a particularly interesting topic as we have heard so much about the Muslim faith in the past couple of years. First we talked about some of the core beliefs in Islam and compared those to that of Judaism and Christianity. One of my goals has been to dispel any stereotypes of this religion but give them an unbiased view of another world religion. It has given way to interesting discussions within class. As well, we have gone over Middle East geography in class, much to the dislike of the students. However, we have talked about why it is so important to discuss geography and understand the world in which we live.

During Thanksgiving week our school had many celebrations that included food and lots of fun. Fourth and Fifth grade had truly traditional Feasts. Students dressed as Pilgrims and Indians, gave thanks, and ate lots and lots of yummy food. Middle School and High School had huge feasts in the Fellowship Hall. There was a bounty of food, talent, and giving of thanks to the Lord for His many blessings. A great time was had by all. Make sure to “check out” galleries for lots of great pics.

The ninth grade Global classes just began a chapter on the Americas. The students discovered how the ancient Americans traveled over the Bering Strait in the Ice Age in search of food and populated North and South America. We have gone over both the Mayan and Aztec cultures and next we will discuss the Ancient Incan civilization. The students have shown interest in this topic because of movies and cartoons, as well some of the students have traveled to some of these countries and have explained what these giant pyramid structures looked like.

Evangel’s Freshman English class continues their exploration of good vs. evil in Steinbeck’s The Pearl. They will be wrapping up their study of this lyrical parable by performing skits of the major events of each chapter. Feel free to stop by and have a peek!

Living Environment: 9th grade:
For the up and coming scientists of the high school November will be wrapping up the unit on Ecology and pulling together all the loose ends so that the students will have a big picture about how ecosystems work. After studying in great detail about the non-human living components (animals and plants) of ecosystems, it’s time to focus us (humans)-quite possible the most vital role in ecosystems. Students are going to be able to see exactly how their behaviors affect the world around them. We are looking at populations in generals and then more specifically how we as humans alter the ecosystem either positively or negatively. I am excited for the students to finally apply their knowledge to real life and make the connections between how they live now and how they should be living.
