In 11th Grade English, we have taken a turn for the better with some mind boggling and suspenseful short stories. Students have been exposed to 5 particularly important reading strategies that will assist them in dissecting literary works. Using interesting and unique short stories have helped them identify literary elements, devices and techniques that authors use to compel their readers. Hopefully as students continue to get exposed to the amazing world of short stories, their minds will continue to be opened and their critical thinking skills will broaden.

Chemistry students have come to appreciate the mole, a unit used in Chemistry. They raced the clock to count out 200 small beads and then weighed the 200 beads. They quickly realized that it was much faster to weigh the beads than count them. They took this concept into the lab and weighed 1 mole samples of various materials and compared the volume of each.

Algebra II students have been studying powers. They like the challenge of solving these problems and racing to see who gets the final answer first. Students also completed a math lab. They compared the walking speed of each class member measured as they walked the hall with the theoretical walking speed as calculated by an athletic trainer. They analyzed the data and gave many reasons for the discrepancies.

We have discussed the most prominent events of the exodus and the time the Israelites spend in the desert and how God formed them into a powerful nation. We are now studying the Tabernacle, and how God asked of the Israelites to worship Him. We are studying this in an effort to find out what is the worship God seeks and demands of us. We are learning that our Holy God demands his people to be holy. As the gold mitre (diadem) of the high priest read, we must be “Holy unto the Lord”.

Learning verb conjugations have been our toughest challenge this month, especially the imperfect past tense. The students were a little confused at first, but finally have gotten a good grasp of it. They are trying hard to use it in our classroom conversations. We have started reading the Psalms in Spanish aloud during our devotional time to get accustomed to hearing the language and practice listening skills.

Forensics Classes are studying about the 2nd Amendment: The Right to Bear Arms. The students watched a video on the militia and its history. They wrote their views as Pros and Cons. We had a class discussion on the positive and negative aspects of gun control.

Happy New Year!
We look forward to a new year of hope – hope in the Lord and assurance that God has a perfect plan for each student.
January is an exciting time with new goals set for a new year and yet a difficult month with mid terms on the way, homework to stay on top of and the Academic Fair coming. In Resource Room we will be checking our goals and finding strategies with which we can realistically meet those goals. Now is the time for students, parents and teachers to truly work together as a team to help students set good goals and begin to achieve them. In I Corinthians 12: 24-27 the Bible says, “But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

In Consumer math, students have been working through business balance sheets, with its similarities to balancing a checkbook. Students will now focus on the Profit and Loss in a business. We will be also talking about how profit and loss affect them whether they have a business or are working for someone.
