Poetry Jam

We have begun our semester of poetry. We’re even studying the famous Anglo-Saxon epic, Beowulf. Students have been taught strategies and poetic theories to help them express their inner voice. Students have created four poems and are now preparing for the 3rd Annual Poetry Jam which is taking place on Tuesday, November 2 at 7 PM. Tickets are on sale. If anyone is interested, please call the school.

Medieval Literature

El Cantar de Mío Cid was probably written in 1140, approximately forty years after the death of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar – el Cid—of the Spanish Reconquista. It is the oldest piece of medieval Spanish literature and was originally written in verse.

Often compared to the Biblical king David, El Cid is seen not only as a great hero and warrior, but as an affectionate and caring husband and father, a loyal subject to his king, and as a man who never loses his personal dignity.

As we continue to journey into the world of El Cid, lessons on loyalty, compassion, dignity, and honor are noted worthy of adopting as our own.

“My whole heart follows hard after you and clings closely to you!”

We were thrilled bout our first spiritual emphasis week for the 2010-2011 school year.  It was held September 20-24.

The theme for Elementary School was “Spirit of the Seas.”  Each day during bible time, students focused on a bible story which all centered in on obedience.  The stories covered during this week were:  Jesus Calming the Storm, Noah and the Ark, Jonah, The Disciples Casting Their Nets & Peter Walking on the Water.  Each day students were able to have worship time, a bible lesson, memory verse and complete a craft.  The week concluded with an interactive bible story, including a large boat and someone “walking on water,” during chapel.  It was a great week and students received a certificate and snack for their completion of our Spiritual Emphasis Week.

Pastor Tom Mahairas (founder of Manhattan Bible Church) came in to speak to our Middle and High Schoolers. He graciously shared his testimony with them and spoke about how God rescued him from a life of drug addiction. Pastor Mahairas also shared that there are 3 types of Believers….. The Believer, The Non-Believer, and the Make-Believer…….he challenged them as to which one they were. At the end he asked all those that would like to rededicate their lives to Christ to come forward. On Friday he shared with them that they are special and that God loves them very much. Seven students came forward to receive Jesus as their personal Saviour. He also asked student to pray for one another.

We praise God for His presence and for moving amongst our students. We are excited to see what He has in store for us this school year!

God is Love

We studied the history of the early church and the letters that were written at the time. We studied Paul’s letters and the way that he explained the truths of the Gospel and how much God loves us. The one thing that stands out in my mind is when we were discussing Romans 8: 38-39 and the student’s realization that truly nothing can separate us from the love of God. That realization that we have His approval because He loves us was freeing to many and allowed us to commit our lives even more to God, not out of duty, but out of love. God is love. God loves me. God loves you. Do you love God?

Spring Celebration

All of these students worked really hard for the Spring Celebration. They learned difficult and challenging moves and even used the flags. Many of the routines were very acrobatic and showed much strength and agility from the students. They tried and succeeded with moves that they had never tried before. I am very proud of all of them.

The Giver

We finished reading The Giver by Lois Lowry and talked about the issue of freedom of choice that was highlighted in the book. This speaking activity was a bit challenging for the Korean students because they not only had to draw information from the reading but had to elaborate on an abstract concept. So we started out by talking about choices we make in our daily lives and what it means to have the freedom to do so. We also looked at societies that don’t/didn’t grant this freedom of choice to their citizens and why that was/is the case. After the discussion, the students were able to organize their thoughts into a journal entry and one of the students shared how thankful she was that God didn’t control us but gave us free will.

UN Trip

As international students, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to visit the UN headquarter located right here in NYC. The 10th graders had just finished studying WW2 and the establishment of the UN as an international peacekeeper so this field trip was all the more meaningful. The students got to speak to a survivor from the Hiroshima bombing, they took a picture in front of the portrait of Mr. Ban Ki Moon, the general secretary and we also went on a group tour where students learned about all the work the UN does for world peace and development. It was an eye-opening experience for us to see the collective efforts of the global society to make this world a better place.

Let’s Talk

This month I wanted to focus on my students’ speaking skills so I found a website that offers questions for conversation practice on various topics. The students were paired up with a conversation partner and they picked a topic of mutual interest. Each then received different sets of questions to take turns asking. As I went around monitoring the conversations, I was hearing some big SAT vocabulary being used. So we did a follow up lesson on the difference between language for writing vs. speaking and also went over some phrasal verbs. I plan on spending more time on these speaking activities.
