New Testament Survey
This Bible class is a survey of the New Testament. We started the year by review what we learned about the Old Testament. We continued with an introduction to the New Testament and how we have the 27 books we now know as the New Testament. We then did an introduction to the Gospels, which is Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and then proceeded to study the gospel of Matthew. In this book we are confronted with Jesus as King and the fulfillment of the prophecies. It is fascinating to see the reaction of the students to what Jesus taught and the discussions that arose in class. Many of the students found a new respect and others a sense of comfort in finding out that Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, and coming were all prophesied and as He had fulfilled the prophesies of his life, death and resurrection so we have the hope of the fulfillment of the Second Coming.

International Week
China. India. Mexico. Brasil. Nepal. Switzerland. Peru. Spain. These are just some of the 73 countries beautifully represented by our students and staff and Evangel Christian School. We held our semi-annual International Week to celebrate the heritages of our families. This year, our celebration took place from October 19th through October 23rd. Throughout the week, students had opportunities to research one or more countries that their families are from, present objects or pictures from their country to their classmates, and dress in their flag’s color or in an outfit native to their land. The highlight was definitely the food sharing portion of International Week where students brought in a dish to share with their peers. From “arroz con pollo” to “roti” and “flan” to a “guarana” drink, both students and staff alike appreciated the delicious and rich culture they got to partake in. We culminated our week by bringing students and staff down to the huge world map located right beyond our main entrace where they put a pin in the city and country they are from. On Friday, the last day of the event, we held a special missions-oriented chapel where an alumnus, Joseph Lee, talked about his parents who are missionaries to Indonesia and showed a slide presentation of their work there. Check out the wonderful pictures in “galleries” and be blessed as you see the excitement on the student’s faces as they show pride in their heritage!
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar once said, “One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team.” Teamwork is just one lesson that our students need to learn in order to become successful in life. Whether they go on to become a professional athlete, doctor, lawyer, business man, teacher, etc, they need to learn how to get along and work side by side with their peers despite their differences. Through sports, students learn that they are just one part of a whole and in order for the team to function they all need to contribute.

Government students have been learning about the founding of our country, focusing specifically on the ideas of liberty and order. Can liberty and order coexist? Students also participated in a passionate discussion about whether or not rebellion against a tyrannical government is justified. We are currently studying the Constitutional Convention and have even been having our own mock Constitutional Convention with delegates debating and compromising in order to form a classroom Constitution.

We began our first day thinking about our thoughts, which are our private mental processes. We have been discussing human behavior and trying to understand why we are the way we are. There are several reasons why humans behave in certain ways and psychologist have been studying this, many years. We are now moving into chapter 2 which discusses psychological research methods.

Welcome to the world of poetry! We are developing a poetry portfolio through out the entire first quarter. We have been discussing several topics including our personal hero’s. On back to school night parents will see that the majority of the students have chosen their moms or dad. Thumbs up to the parents who have sacrificed to put their children in our school. You have influenced your own children and it shows in the classroom.

Greetings again from the Middle School and High School Resource Room!
We just finished “Back-to-School Night” for both middle and high school and I had a great time meeting both new and old parents. It looks like Resource is on it’s way to working at facilitating team effort between teacher, parent and student. The parents I met are active in their child’s education and will be a great mix of help, accountability and encouragement to them. The time with them was both informative and important for student success. Our concentration with the students this month is on self-management and productivity in class. Note taking skills are revisited and expounded on to improve student notes as a tool for studying for tests. We have a lot to look forward to as God’s plan for each student unfolds.

Fall greetings from the Middle School and High School Resource Room! This year we are blessed to have Mrs. Cathy Hampton join our team. She has wonderfully stepped in to help as Evangel’s Resource Center has grown. She is a special asset in assisting the international students in all classes.
As the year started students came with a great sense of expectation, positive attitudes and high goals. In Resource we are setting the groundwork for success first through prayer and second by covering the Building Blocks to School success. This includes but isn’t limited to study skills (SQ3R), reading skills (finding the main idea), Learning Styles Assessments (visual, tactile, auditory), how to take good notes and how to read the textbooks effectively.
It is a blessing to have students from all over the world at Evangel. Our international students represent interesting and varied countries of the world such as China, Indonesia, Korea, Peru, Philippines, Switzerland, Venezuela, and Viet Nam, and many more. Locating their home countries on our classroom map, gave all of the students a chance to discuss the distance to the United States. Becoming familiar with American Idioms has been challenging but it helps with both their conversation and written English skill building. As they discuss their assignments, we might say that some of the answers “are on the tip of your tongue” as a way to practice the use of idioms in conversation. There are many new things to teach and learn for everyone.

Seniors have 2 goals this year in Math – the Regents and the SAT. They have been practicing using a calculator to graph various functions. They are very focused and are working very hard.
Mrs. Wong

The seniors began their first year of Physics by studying motion. They measured how far a toy car can travel and how far a marble on a ramp can roll.
