“Tongxue-men hao!”

I am pleased to introduce Beginner Mandarin elective class this year. We are going to learn some basic conversations (greetings, introducing yourself, and friends), and to learn how to read and write simple Chinese characters, numbers (1-1000), days, months, week, and birthdays. A group activity will be taking place such as: practicing conversation with your partners, introducing your family to your classmates, and singing songs in Chinese. Not only that, but we will be watching a biography of Gladys Aylward movie, and learn some facts from China Today every week. Always remember the three nuggets for learning a new language: set a side a few minutes every day to memorize new words, repeat-repeat-repeat, and find a friend to practice if you can not practice by yourself. See you at class!

This week students will be “playing teacher” by giving presentations on Asia’s First Civilizations, India and China. We just wrapped up a unit on ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia in which we also compared these cultures to the emerging culture of the Israelites. The Israelites were (unlike their neighbors) monotheists whose God was seen as a protective Father rather than as fickle, violent, and anthropomorphic like the other ancient gods. We saw this first hand by reading the “Enuma Elish,” a Babylonian creation myth.

In the first few weeks of class, students have discussed the meaning of civilization, and have talked about how the creation of civilizations is actually a fulfillment of God’s creation mandate (that humans should fill and subdue the earth). Since we are made in God’s image, humans have the ability to create, to order their surroundings, and to think, speak, and write. These things enable us to form civilizations. We reviewed the Paleolithic Era and the Neolithic Revolution and are now beginning with a unit on Mesopotamia and Egypt, in which we are reading Babylonian creation and flood myths and comparing them to the Biblical accounts.

: A great year studying World History and the foundations that have set the stage for the present time. Final papers were very informative and well-done for the most part. Let us move on and create new history!

Evangel’s newspaper elective diligently worked on completing their final issues for the year. The HS elective was given the challenge of independently putting the paper together. They chose a project manager for the assignment and were expected to fully cooperate with their leader. Though, they faced a little frustration with the paper design, they realized success and published an issue they could be proud of.

The high school students worked on “Do You Like Me” and “ I Can Only Image”.

These students worked very hard by practicing and learning how to warm up their body by stretching, isolation and working out their stomach and muscles. The students did a wonderful job!

world-globe-fullIn World Civ. we have not only been looking at revolutionaries who have changed their region of the world, but we have also been looking at how the rest of the world looks at change and nationalism. We are finishing the course as we approach more contemporary issues in our global economy and community. We are also looking at what impact we can have as individual citizens participating in such a large network of human beings.

We’re approaching modern times as we sift through the Cold War and the ideologies at war with one another. We will see how conflict and tension has shaped the world we live in from its economy to entertainment.
