MS/HS Painting Elective Spring 2008
Ms. Janna DykThe emphasis for this class was on color mixing. Students were given the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow), as well as black and white, from which they learned to mix a variety of paint colors for their studies. An example of the color mixing exercise the class practiced is below. The assignment was to create the greatest variety of colors available using only the primary colors and white and black.
Considering Faith, Joy, and Peace in Mural Art
The climactic project was a group piece depicting some of aspect of faith, joy, or peace. Divided into groups of three or four, students created works that dealt with scenes illustrating, symbolizing, or representing these themes. A large part of the project was the discussion of murals and public art, as well as what an artist or group may intend in creating each.
Lo qué hicimos este año/A highlight of some activities from class this year…· Creating short stories using the conditional tense, to talk about “Lo que haría si hubiera un animal” (What I would do if I were an animal).
· Examining Spanish and English grammar to practice sentence formation
· Reading excerpts from internet articles, writing responses to a variety of questions, listening to Spanish music, and playing Spanish “Cinco” (Bingo) to increase comprehension
· Listening to and translating Spanish music for practice and new vocabulary
· Practicing the four components of the Spanish Regents Exam: listening, speaking, writing, and reading
· One student had this to say about class: “La clase de español es una experiencia tan buena! Although I come from a Spanish-speaking family, it´s extremely easy to forget all the things you learn speaking Spanish… Spanish class keeps you sharp, aware, and gives you a lot more of proper, spoken Spanish.”
· Textbook materials included Glencoe Spanish Buen Viaje, Nivel 2 textbook and workbook, Let´s Review Spanish, and Barron´s Spanish Regents Exams and Answers

“If Fredy here were a “Señor” like your “abuelo” and it were night time, how would you greet him?” I asked the class.”Buenas noches, Señor!” the class chimes together.
Imagine for a moment three students in front of the class: an “abuela” (grandma or elderly lady) clad in pearls and a scarf, an “abuelo” (grandpa or elderly man) sporting a sombrero, and an “alumno” who gets to be “lo normal”. Each represent one of the various people students might encounter when practicing informal and formal Spanish greetings.
This year the 6th grade classes completed an introduction into Spanish. Engaging in role- play activities such as these, students also performed skits, created drawings, practiced with worksheets, and composed short writing assignments, and viewed movies in Spanish and about Spanish culture.
Student work was particularly exemplary in completing the mid-year group projects; a summation of research, writing, and artwork inspired by the cultures of various Spanish-speaking countries.

We held class elections to coincide with our Social Studies lessons on government. We elected a class president and vice-president, nominated a supreme court that tried a case, and had our congress pass a bill. Overall it’s been a great year!
In May, we watched the extraordinary metamorphosis of larvae into butterflies in our classroom. We were so glad that they all made it!!! Then in June, we released our butterflies into their natural habitat during our end of the year picnic at Astoria Park, where we had relay races and played water balloon games.
This has been an exciting and of the year for 4th grade. In February, we took a field trip to the Moon at the Museum of Natural History’s Planetarium. Then in March, we viewed the life of Harriet Tumban, a runaway slave turned hero, when we went to see “Freedom Train” an inspiring play
In the 10 L Bible class, we are going over the final days of Jesus’ life and discussing the amazing sacrifice of His death on the cross for our sins.
In 9th grade, the students have been going over ancient and modern Asia. I was able to share from my experiences in China this past summer and showed them pictures and cultural artifacts in our discussions. – Mr. Fowler
