In 12th Grade English, we have entered into the Elizabethan Period – The World of Shakespeare. Students have stood up and expressed their very own soliloquies. Their thoughts about their future ambitions were shared out loud. What an interesting time, I even learned something about each student that I never knew before. After knowing them for 2 to 4 years, I never really asked about what their hopes for their future were. We have read through Act One, and thank goodness for students with such great personalities that help with reading out loud and making class a little more exciting.

In Psychology, we have been discussing the phenomenon of Memory. Have you ever tried to remember something and ever stated, “It’s right at the tip of my tongue”. Well this is part of trying to retrieve memorable events or words and is literally called, On the top of the Tongue Phenomenon. Studying Psychology helps students to slow down the process of mental processes and human behavior. One fun activity we did in class was recall promises that were broken. Students were able to retrieve that information really quickly. We are getting ready to enter into the chapter on Thinking and Language Development. It definitely gets better and better.

In Physics Lab students are designing a roller coaster out of Knex to wrap up our study of mechanics. Each team is responsible for a different aspect of the construction. Some are designing the loops, some are designing the tracks, and others are designing the roller coaster car for the track. The students will then study what worked and did not work with their design and make the necessary adjustment to provide a thrilling ride.

Chemistry students have come to appreciate the mole, a unit used in Chemistry. They raced the clock to count out 200 small beads and then weighed the 200 beads. They quickly realized that it was much faster to weigh the beads than count them. They took this concept into the lab and weighed 1 mole samples of various materials and compared the volume of each.

Geometry students have spent the last few weeks preparing for the Math A Regents. They have also finished a study on transformations by reflecting images, and sliding and rotating them. They also worked with photos to enlarge and reduce the images (dilations).

Algebra II students have been studying powers. They like the challenge of solving these problems and racing to see who gets the final answer first. Students also completed a math lab. They compared the walking speed of each class member measured as they walked the hall with the theoretical walking speed as calculated by an athletic trainer. They analyzed the data and gave many reasons for the discrepancies.

It’s back to work again in 5E, but not before sharing that our Healthy Eating recipe book has done it again. As you know we are the Grand prizewinners in the PBS Produce for Kids contest. We were also blessed with the honor of being in the newspaper. I know that we never thought we would make it to a news story inside the periodical “The Gazette.” This lesson really hit home in 5E. Many of the students are eating more fruits and vegetables. We have learned that eating healthy is important. Some kids have even made a resolution to eat better for 2009. We created a contest to pick the best cover for our recipe book. We are excited about publishing our recipe book!

December was a very busy month for 5E. With our amazing Junior Choir we spread the Joy of Christmas for the elderly, the sick and the less fortunate people around us this year. We sang our hearts out to the Lord and ministered to the hearts of the people in need. As put by one of the students “It’s the most wonderful time of the year to share JESUS!
