Students are learning about the purpose of our Christian School, God’s plan for their life and the God we serve. They have already completed two quizzes and a unit test. They will continue learning about leadership through God’s perseverance in our lives, His discipline, discipleship, His dislikes and building their character to be like that of Christ.

We are learning the sign language alphabet, and also sign language words. And for the first time, this year the boys and girls are learning how to call 9-11. If there is an emergency at home with Mom or Dad, the children are learning how to call for help. We practice on a real, (disconnected) phone.

We sing worship songs every day, and pray together as a class. We also sing silly songs including Zippity Doo Dah and the Pussy Willow Song. We also have fun singing about Tommy Thumpkin with funny voices.

We have made fuzzy yellow ducks, green turtles, laid on the rug to make squares with our bodies, and played real triangles. We are learning God’s word and have been learning two verses: Matthew 18:5, “And whoever welcomes a little child like this in My name welcomes Me.” And also, Jeremiah 31:3, ” I have loved you with an everlasting love, I have drawn you with lovingkindness.”

September got off to a busy start in Pre-K 4. We have a class of 24 children: 16 girls and 8 boys. We started right away learning the Letter of the Week. We have begun the numbers as well. We met Mr. Feely, a box friend who has a secret object inside, and we have to use our fingers only to touch it and try to guess what it is. The very first object was a real ostrich egg. We have also met Mr. Alligator, a green puppet who especially likes to nibble little ears!

In English grade 9 and 10 for the month of September 2009, we have been working on writing skills, by focusing on expository essays, essays about the student’s summer, mnemonic devices, etc. I have given the students freedom to write on topics of their interest and choice, while using the defined skills. Through writing and expression, I have seen their career pursuit, endeavors, and special interests displayed, nurtured, and developed. We are continuing to write on current events, giving the student the opportunity to express, evaluate and investigate using questioning and inductive methods.

3G has been borrowing books every week and at the end or the beginning of the period depending on the class mood we have been having story time by reading a chapter or so from the book by David A. Adler, “Cam Jansen and the First Day of School Mystery.” Our students have been captivated by the story line and enjoying such books at home also by borrowing similar titles by Mr. Adler to take home with them.

2B has been doing an Author study of Kevin Henkes. They have enjoyed listening to his wonderful stories of mouse tales. We have read “Wemberly Worried,” “Chrysanthemum,” and “Julius The Baby Of The World.” Kevin Henkes uses such rich language and beautiful illustrations to match an exciting story line, it has been a pleasure to enjoy his books along with our second graders.

1C has enjoyed the privilege of borrowing books for the first time. We have gone over the procedures for checking out books, and how their books are to be taken care of while at home. They also have enjoyed quiet reading on their own and some story time as a class.
