Come Watch Our Seeds Grow

planting_seeds_hg_clr

We have at-home and in-school projects with seeds and plants growing, to get ready for the March 18th Academic Fair, which in Pre-K 4 this year is a Science Fair. The students are having a blast watching our little seeds become seedlings! See you at the Fair!

We can sing in other languages

volunteers_holding_hands_around_earth_hg_clr

Singing is a part of our daily class routine. We learned a song about George Washington and the Yankee Doodle Dollar. Our song reminded us that Lincoln helped free the slaves and was loved by many.

We also learned “Are You Sleeping, Brother John” in English and French and next we will learn the song in Spanish and Portuguese.

A to Z

We are almost done with the alphabet. Writing the letter of the week continues to be a weekly challenge but we pray and Jesus helps us. We do crafts to remind us of the letters. We made umbrellas with raindrops, shiny stars, decorated Tt, and made vegetable soup and wolves to remind us of those letters.

How high can you count?

We have learned up through the number 15 and are now learning about money. We are learning the names of the coins and how much money they are worth. Soon we will continue our math journey to number 20.

Every day we practice counting from one to the current day number when we do the calendar. We did a class graph and saw that more people in our class prefer mittens to gloves.

Who is on our money?

Pre-K 4 Continues to be a busy place. In Social Studies we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and how he worked hard to teach people to be friends and to get along. We learned that George Washington was the first president of our country and appears on the one dollar bill. Abraham Lincoln was the president who helped free the slaves, and HE is on the five dollar bill. We learned about Ground Hog Day…it sounds like we have more winter coming!!!

Learning to use Collegeboard.com

The 11th grade classes have begun taking Junior Seminar during computer lab time. They are discovering where to begin the long road to choosing a college and finding the right financing for their education. They are using collegeboard.com to get their name out there and find out what SAT scores they will need to get into the school and program of their choosing.

See what we can do with Microsoft Publisher

The 9th and 10th grade classes have been using Microsoft Publisher. We have designed greeting cards, flyers, and calendars. As they discover how to use the different toolbars they are also finding their creativity in design, layout and prose. For the academic fair, which is coming up in March, we have learned how to use the reference toolbar in Microsoft Word to cite our sources in MLA format and create a bibliography page. We have also worked on paraphrasing from our sources so we avoid plagiarism.

Picking Up Speed With Mavis Beacon

The middle school classes have been practicing their tying skills using Mavis Beacon. Our goal is to work up to 30 words per minute with 95-100% accuracy. We have also just finished our 2nd MAP testing so we will be able to see student growth in Reading and Math. For the academic fair, which is coming up in March, we have learned how to use the reference toolbar in Microsoft Word to cite our sources in MLA format and create a bibliography page.

Fun with Word Art

Students have finished working on Microsoft Word- WordArt In January. We have worked on a project where we have chosen a piece of technology that we cannot live without and have used WordArt to make it more appealing to our audience. Each student has also taken a pretest to help determine what they know and what they still need to learn in Microsoft Word. Check out Recipes4success online. Our school’s user name is ECS and password school. (Anyone connected to Evangel may use it!)
