Fun with Probability

Our Integrated Algebra class is experimenting with probability. We flipped coins and pulled marbles out of bags. We have learned how to use our Ti83+ calculator to compute complex probability problems.

Lets make towers

Our 7th grade math classes have been exploring volume and area. In a recent class activity we built towers using 1 inch cubes and then we drew what they looked like from the side, front and aerial views.

Fun with Geoboards

This month we are playing around with Geometry. We are using Geoboards with rubber bands to create quadrilaterals, and plastic plates to form obtuse, acute and right angles! Recently we used our smart board to play a golf game and practice acute and right angles.

The Giver

We started reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. This was a challenging jump from a 5th grade to an 8th grade reading level and it has created a linguistically richer context for students to engage in conversations. The book portrays a future society controlled by many rules so we started talking about what an ideal life/community would look like. The students are struggling a bit with the level of vocabulary and the complexity of the text so for now, we are spending a lot of classroom time reading and marking the text together. Eventually I hope to incorporate more discussions and writing about what we read.

Look at the light

Students have been studying light this month. They have investigated reflection and refraction. In their hands on activities they used a laser refraction tank in order to see and measure reflection & refraction. They were amazed to see these properties at work.

Chemical Reactions

Students have been studying chemical reactions this month. They are now able to predict the products of a reaction and to balance equations. In lab they were amazed to watch the reaction of gases with indicators. They enjoy it when they can see color changes, bubbles or precipitates form.

Which slice is the best deal

Students worked on trig this month and learned how to use the law of sines and cosines. They also learned how to find the area of a sector. This became extremely useful when they applied their new skills to determine the area of a slice of pizza and which slice was the best deal.

Lets Measure

Students have been investigating quadrilaterals this month. They have cut, folded, measured and constructed. They were able to discover many of the properties we studied on their own.
