The Easter Story

Every Friday during our reading intervention sessions students in grade 1-3rd take a sentence reading assessment, which entails weekly phonics skills, high-frequency words and the vocabulary words of the week. Students who complete their daily reading and homework assignments do very well.

On April 1st, the last day before beginning our Easter recess and after we completed our sentence reading assessment the students enjoyed reviewing the Easter story using the resurrection eggs. Each egg had a small item; a donkey which reminded them of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and 11 other items representing the Easter story. In addition to using the resurrection eggs, the students learned that years ago during the Lent season people made a bread that would remind them that they should pray. Each student was given a home-made chocolate pretzel to observe how the dough was shaped like arms that cross the heart in prayer. After making this observation and discussing the importance of prayer we also enjoyed the chocolate covered treat. So, whenever you see a pretzel think of it’s origin and remember the importance of prayer. Especially during Lent when we recall the forty days Jesus spent in the desert, fasting and becoming strong as he thought deeply about fulfilling His mission on this earth.

Drug Research

Students got in groups of seven to work on their drug research projects. As a group they were responsible for a two page research paper along with a bibliography and citations. Each group also did a presentation and a poster board showing the effects drugs has on people’s physical and mental abilities. Some of the groups did their presentation with a skit or a Rap.

Creations of Transportation

Wow the class is starting to look like a construction zone. I have K’Nex, Lego’s and a lot of modeling clay around the room. Roller coasters, bridges, towers, and all sorts of projects are being created. Middle school is working on making a bridge and also towering towers. One of the towers is 4.5 feet tall and another tower is almost 5 feet tall. The roller coaster is almost ready for its first run. Creations of transportation and electronics are finished. God is good and has blessed all in the class with great imaginations. I am ready to see what comes from the students next month.

Our Spelling lessons are fun and we are now writing in script. In Phonics we are going over Diphthongs, which are two letters that come together and make an unexpected sound.
