Benchmark Tests
Unit Benchmark tests are being done this month. It’s our chance to show off how much we learned in Unit 1. All of our reading skills, grammar practice, and hard work will pay off. We can’t wait to see what the next Unit theme will be… Maybe money? Or friendship? Or animals? Or perhaps something international? There are so many amazing books to read!
Literacy day Fun
We’re blasting off into reading this year! We hit the ground running and we’re so excited to see what this year will bring. Bringing our stuffed animals in for Literacy Day was so much fun. If we’re ever home and want to read out loud we can read to our stuffed animals. It might seem a little silly at first, but it’s a great way to practice reading. (And we think it’s a lot of fun too!)

What Time is it?
Many have mastered the concept of single feminine/masculine articles, such as “un” and “una”. Join us now, as we venture into “¿Qué Hora Es?” lessons on telling time and counting through sixty. Ask your child for the time, and you just might get the usual responses commonly known among our surrounding Spanish-speaking heritage.
We have traveled!
Up until now, we’ve had opportunities to learn about four fabulous countries. We’ve uncovered details about the mother country, Spain; learned about the battle of Puebla in Mexico; ventured into Guatemala and its rich Mayan history; and finally, El Salvador, being the smallest country in Central America.

Microsoft Office
Juniors and Seniors are getting close to finishing their Microsoft Office project. This week and next week they are working on their final product, which is a creative application of the skills they have picked up in the Microsoft Office textbook.
Excel
8th through tenth grades are currently developing their skill using Microsoft Excel. We will complete one more exercise before we complete a final assessment to gauge our learning. Many of the students have commented on how challenging and useful the assignments have been. This is a vital skill to know in this day and age.
Mavis Beacon
We have just started their fall typing unit. We are currently taking a fall speed test and will be working on improving their typing skills for several weeks. We are working mostly in Mavis Beacon, though 1st and 2nd Grade are getting to use Word pad as well.
Evangel Christian School was honored with an invitation for a group of
our ninth-graders to visit the Pray Achievement Center in Bedford, New York on Thursday, October 14. The Center, operated by Business Philanthropist Malcolm Pray, is home to his world-class antique and rare car collection, which our students were encouraged to explore, each having the chance to sit behind the wheel of their favorite car.
Mr. Pray uses his collection of nearly 50 rare and valuable cars to engage students in a broader discussion about entrepreneurship and achievement. After the tour and lunch our students sat down with Mr. Pray to learn how good manners, patriotism, and a hardy work ethic will open up doors of opportunity. Mr. Pray’s belief that every hard-working child can succeed fits perfectly with Evangel’s educational philosophy – “With God ALL things are possible!”. We would like to thank Mr. Pray for his hospitality and willingness to speak into the lives of students from Evangel and other Tri-state area schools.

Jewish Heritage Museum
Our 8th grade students had the privaliage of going to the Museum of Jewish Heritage. Students were split into smaller groups and were taken throughout the museum with a tour guide. One of the tour guides shared the story of how his grandmother met his grandfather and they moved to America. Shortly after that, all his grandmother’s siblings were killed in the Holocaust. This story, plus the many others shared, showed students how hatred hurt a whole generation of Jewish people. It was also noted that the same number of students that are currently in New York City public schools were killed during the Holocaust. This trip was eye opening not only for the students but adults as well to see how hate can change an entire nation.
