Terrific Kids

The Kiwanis Club of Hollis presented certificates to the 4th Grade class and they celebrated with ice cream. These certificates are part of the National Terrific Kids Program and recognize the effort each student made during the year to learn. Kiwanis is an international organization with the goal of helping children both locally and throughout the world.

Fun in the Sun

We ended the year with a picnic in the playground. Pretend desert sand, plastic dolphins in water, bubbles, cheerful tablecloths, and wonderful snacks helped make the day special!

Animal Masquerade Party

To celebrate what they learned about animals, PreK 3 had an Animal Masquerade Ball/Party. The children reviewed what they had learned in Bible lessons about God’s creation of the animals and Noah’s Ark. They had a Science Lesson about animals: where they live, how the live, how they look and move. Animal masks were then created in Art Class. A joyous time was had by all who attended.

How things Grow

For our unit on “How things Grow and Mother’s Day, the children planted an edible salad cup. They planted Romaine Lettuce, Iceberg Lettuce, Spinach and Nasturtium seeds. Once sprouted and growing, their Moms had mixed salad greens. Both the leaves (peppery taste) and the flowers of the Nasturtium are edible. The children also helped to care for an Avocado tree that was started from a pit. After eating a Mango they observed the removal of a Mango seed from the pit and then placed it in a sandwich bag with a damp paper towel. Excitement prevailed when they saw the first root of the Mango seed start to grow. Healthy foods and how they grow helped make learning fun!

It’s over?

The school year is over? Wow, how quickly it has come to an end. It’s been an interesting year teaching a bright group of international students from China and Korea. HS Intermediate English was our focus. Reading short stories, folk tales, anecdotes, how to read non-fiction, fiction, what reading strategies to use to understand the text, were some of the genres and concepts covered. I enjoyed this. What was most exciting for me were the many moments when the students reached the place were they were able to convey their opinions, and ideas in English. When they made connections with the text, their culture, their families, etc. and gained the confidence to express it was wonderful to experience. It was a great year discovering how very much alike we are. I remember a story on the life of Bruce Lee. Each text is introduced before reading, so when asked if they were familiar with this person, or if they had ever heard of him, I got some nods and a Yes or two. When we were finished reading the introduction, I added that he was my cousin. When this tid-bit of information was met with their laugther, I knew that they understood. Mrs. Hernandez

Anatomy, DNA, Regents Oh my!

What a year. Students were instructed to be able to pass the regents. The students performed many labs with the intent of learning. One of the most fun labs was when students were designing a baby. Wow, the students were laughing the entire lab. We also dissected a few animals: frog, earthworm, and a crayfish. Some students learned that dissection is not as bad as they thought it would be. While discussing DNA bases (guanine, cytosine, adenine, and thymine) we learned that making a mnemonic would help to remember which bases go together. Gary Coleman is where iT’s At. Guanine and cytosine combine while Thymine and Adenine combine. Living environment had a great year with many things that students had to learn.

Look at Those Clouds

We have done a lot of interesting things this year. The students have learned what types of clouds are in the sky. How does the weather form? A 6th grader will be able to answer that question. We have done experiments on how gravity affects things and whether or not these things are affected by friction caused by the air. Some students have created short movies for their presentations. Each student was able to learn more about their strengths in learning and were able to work on increasing their weaknesses. We have covered many topics this year ranging from different kinds of weather,to different types of plants, and animals.
