Government

Students have been studying Congress–its powers, primary responsibilities, and the process through which a bill becomes a law. Although we had fun watching the School House Rock cartoon, “I’m Just a Bill,” students’ knowledge of this process now (thankfully) goes deeper than that two minute clip! Students also researched Congressmen and presented their findings about their backgrounds, political beliefs, and time served in office. We are concluding the unit by writing letters to our Representatives in Congress and City Council about local issues ranging from transportation to the police department.

The US Constitution

US History: Students have immersed themselves in studying the Constitution–its principles, the debates surrounding its ratification, and the ways those principles played themselves out in the new government under Washington, Adams, and Jefferson. We will wrap up this unit by writing a Regents practice thematic essay on the principles and flexibility of the Constitution.

We Are Thankful

This month has been a busy and exciting month for kindergarten. We had the opportunity to visit our local library, and listen to funny stories from the librarian. We have also had the opportunity to make shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Some of the children filled shoeboxes with toys, food, toiletries, and small articles of clothing for the children in other countries. We even received a chance to be filmed for the upcoming Operation Christmas Child promotion video. In class, kindergarten expressed how thankful they are for all they have, and we prayed over the children that would receive each shoebox. During our Thanksgiving Holiday we will remember all that we have.

Our Gingerbread Man

Well … We were very sad when the Gingerbread Man that we baked escaped from the oven… But he is keeping in touch and sending us postcards from all over the United States and telling us all about his adventures. He also made sure to send us each a gingerbread cookie to decorate and gobble up! We have been thinking of all the different ways he could have escaped from the oven………….. We hope he doesn’t get eaten up.

MS Thanksgiving Feast 070
On Monday, November 23rd, 2009, students from Grades 6th through 8th gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving.  From sharing what they are thankful for to a pie-eating contest, the students had a blast!  Middle Schoolers did the conga around the Fellowship Hall followed by a classic game of limbo and doing the famous electric slide.  This after delighting in homemade food and desserts.  A good time was had by all–to see for yourself, check out the photo gallery!
