Reading Class
During the week of October 13-16, students began reading The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis. They read chapters 1-3, completed comprehension questions, and completed a quiz. In class, we discussed the setting, characters, and key events/conversations.

The All-American Slurp
During the week of October 13-16, we reviewed and discussed the story, The All-American Slurp, involving two families, one Chinese and one American. Students completed a test on the story and then began a population bar graph as an extension of the story. Students learned about the overcrowding problem in China and their one-child policy. Students compared their population with several other countries.

Cause and Effect
During the week of Oct. 13-16, our new list of spelling words was introduced; the focus was words ending with the suffix –tial or –cial or –cian. We also began our unit on Cause & Effect. I gave some notes and showed students my own example essay about the causes of financial debt. Then, students began brainstorming ideas for their own essay: 3 causes and 3 effects.

Fun In English
This week, students learned about some of the different types of paragraphs: narrative, expository, descriptive, and persuasive. After I shared my own childhood memory narrative, students wrote and shared their own. We also played a game as an introduction to description: one student was blindfolded and an object was revealed to the rest of the class. Using adjectives only, the class had to try to help their blindfolded classmate guess the object.

After reading a few short essays and a poem in the “Taking the High Road” workbooks, the students had a great discussion and brainstorming session as we listed ways that we tend to stereotype people. Additionally, students learned more about types of characters (dynamic & flat) and the elements of plot: exposition, characters, setting, conflict, rising action, climax, falling actions, resolution, and theme.

In the beginning of October, students learned about compound subjects, helping verbs, and infinitives. They had to identify them in context in their Easy Grammar workbooks. We also played “Sparkle” to review for the Spelling & Vocab. quiz.
