Elementary grades are learning how to draw, not just how to draw but how to break down a picture by starting with shapes. For example they were asked to copy a drawing of a farm (animals included). Once they drew the picture their way they were shown how to draw more effectively by drawing the shapes within each animal first, then moving on to details. The second time they were given a different picture to copy and were much more successful in getting it accurate.

They also Decoupage their art folders with colorful pieces of paper and magazine cut outs.

This week Middle School is working on Pointillism. Pointillism is a technique of painting using dots of colors very close to one another (instead of mixed colors) allowing the eye to mix the colors for you.

Sixth and seventh grade are working on Partial Pointillism, where only half of their paintings will be in the pointillism technique, while eight grade is working on painting a picture entirely in the pointillism style.

Pointillism although created in the late 1800’s by unconventional artist who were mocked for this new style of painting, is still used today. Television sets, computer screens and even digital cameras use a form of pointillism. Ever look really close at a computer or television screen? You’ll notice that the picture you are seeing is made up of tiny little dots of unmixed colors, the most common (cyan, magenta, yellow). Today we call it pixels or mega pixels.

Just imagine… what would our world be like without the unconventional artist?

What better way to enjoy school than with your favorite furry friend? That’s exactly what students in grades Pre-K3 through 5th got to do on Tuesday, September 29. Students and teachers were encouraged to bring their most beloved friend to show off during the day. Children excitedly placed their favorite animals on their desks as they worked hard throughout the day. “Bring Your Favorite Stuffed Animal to School Day!” – just another way we get to know each other a little bit better here at Evangel Christian School! Check out the cute and cuddly pictures in the gallery section of our website!

In Science we’ve been reading about plants and how each part needs each other to survive. Just as the roots, the stem, and the flower need each other, in like manner, second graders need each other. We work in our class as a team. We also learned how animals camouflage to survive.

In our reading class our second graders have learned to distinguish the difference between urban and rural places through the story of Iris and Walter. Iris, a young city girl, went to live in the country with her grandpa. To the kids’ surprise this young lady found the country boring until she met Walter who showed her what a fun place the country can be. Iris loved Walter’s tree house.

In our Bible class, the kids are learning about the promises of God. He promised that there is a beautiful place for us in heaven with streets of gold. They are excited about that wonderful promise. It’s another way for them to see how much Jesus loves them.

Our second graders enjoyed working on their glymps this month in our math class. They had to represent their birthday, the number of people in their household, and their favorite sport and season. They also had the opportunity to interpret their classmates’ chart. It was an excellent way for them to learn how to design and read a chart. In addition, they had room to be artistic when constructing their glymp.

In our class we are learning how science is related to everyday life. Matter, Matter everywhere – exploring the basic unit of matter, the structure of Atoms. In lab students are learning how to use microscopes and create wet mount slides. Its always pretty exciting to see their reactions as they see what is not visible to the naked eyes through magnifications. Ohh – ahhh – yuck – ill Mrs.!!!!

teacher_reading_to_children_hg_clrKindergarten began the year off with a great start! During the month of September Kindergarten explored shapes, patterns, classification, and has made up new games that can be incorporated into our math work place time. We are also excited to be working with Mrs. Bienemann our new reading teacher, who reads to us everyday and works together with Ms. Velez and Mrs. Torres during our reading time. KV is very excited about the concepts they will explore and learn as the year progresses.
