This year the reading lab has experienced many fun activities. The fifth grade students presented a play in the fellowship hall and all of the elementary school students were invited. Several hands-on experiments were experienced with the Daybook for the Second grade, such as acting out our reader stories. Third grade enjoyed their favorite activities in their workstation times. Fourth grade acquired many new vocabulary words. All in all, the year was a fun filled adventure for each grade.

Our 9th grade class of Advanced Spanish went on a trip to a Spanish restaurant. Before the restaurant, we had a small tour of the neighborhood where they saw different markets they have been learning about in class. It was very gratifying to hear them talk about the things they had learned in class. At the restaurant, the students had to order in Spanish because our waitress did not speak English. They were able to put into practice what they had learned in class.

The Elementary school did a fantastic job in ministering at Evangel Church this past May. They sang worship sons like “Praise Adonai” and “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”. Pre-K 4 gave the congregation a special treat by singing a dinosaur song. Each student wore a handmade dinosaur hat and displayed dinosaur cut outs they painted during class. Upper elementary students gave an amazing dance performance to “Shout to the Lord”. The Junior Chorus sang “Incessentently” lead by two soloists, Chantel Eaddy and Astroy Semple. The drama team put on a fantastic performance of “Cedric the Centipede” which focused on the importance of every member and function of the body of Christ. Mrs. Torres
We learned about many new and exciting things in Science this year.. Through the several labs, students learned about fingerprints, cell division, genetics, and more. Students also had to choose their favorite parts after each chapter and create fascinating projects about them. Thank you all for a wonderful and crazy yearJ! Mr. West
In November we went on a trip to Petco Land. There we picked a new class pet: a beta fish. One of our students, Luis Velez, volunteered to take care of the fish during holidays in the school year. Thanks a lot Luis!

During this school year our class worked on various projects. After each chapter, students would choose their favorite part or what they had learned about the chapter. Projects were hung proudly in the classroom for all to see and learn. We also completed projects for Women’s Month and President’s Day. The election was one of our most interesting subjects. Students picked which party they felt they would like to vote for Democrat/Republican. We also learned about our judicial systems and how the United States grew to become an amazing country.

When asked, eighth grade student, Haley Strong said, “I think this year was a lot of fun! I especially enjoyed the cookie experiment!” (we removed chocolate chips from chocolate chip cookies to show how mining affects the environment) “Those cookies tasted GOOD!”

In class the students learned about volcanoes, tectonic plates and natural disasters. The class’s favorite was oceanography. Over one of the breaks, the students did projects on earth Day and Water Conservation. We learned a few ways to do our part in conserving water which are: turn the tap off when brushing your teeth, not washing the car with a hose, fixing the leak in your faucet and taking a minute out of your daily shower (if you take baths, you can fill your bathtub only half way.)

On May 14th the eighth grade science class went on a trip to the Museum of natural History to study the exhibits on display of minerals and rocks. During the trip, the students had lots of fun exploring and learning new things. They were able to interact with the exhibits that they saw.
The students spoke with a lady who displayed a collection (demonstration of rocks) and explained what they were made of, what they could be made into and how they felt. Did you know that toothpaste contains fluoride? The students also saw gold in the form it has before humans shape it into necklaces, bracelets and other things we use gold for today. We also were able to see precious gems such as sapphires, rubies and diamonds in their original forms (when they are still in contact with the earth; we even got to see fool’s gold!)

One of the most exciting times this year in Computer Lab had to be the 10th grade learning Photoshop. I introduced Adobe Photoshop CS2 to the 10th grade at ECS and they were very quick to catch on to the photo editing software. We started the Photoshop chapter of Compute Lab on how to maneuver your way around the editior and learned the basic tools. Each week we would have a video lesson and a lab. The video lesson consisted of a professional graphic designer teaching the basic tools of Photoshop and also sharing some tricks along the way. I would then provide the students with a lab that would correspond with the previous lesson. The labs consisted of creating special affects for pictures, editing text to make it have a special design, and even creating writing to make it look like it was imprinted in a stone.
I was very impressed on how the 10th grade caught on so quickly and how they responded to learning a new technology. I look forward to continuing to help the students learn in technology as they apply it to their lives. I am confident if you ever need any help editing any pictures at home you can ask your 10th grade student and they will be of great help!
