π day!!!
Or approximately 3.14159… We couldn’t wait for March 14th or 3/14 to get here! The class played discovery games with cylinders and circles. We practiced area and circumference to find patterns. They even learned a song that sings the first 200 places of pi!

Two trains leave two cities at two separate times. One of them is traveling a lot faster than the other one. When will these two trains meet? Do you remember these crazy problems? My class discovered how to simplify the complexities of these problems by assigning each partner a vehicle and speed and actually walking towards each other using the classroom floor’s tiles to help show miles. They had a blast!

Advanced Algebra
Solving inequalities and finding their place in the real world was key to this month’s lessons. Students practiced skills learned equations and then got hands-on with real world scenarios that do not require exact amounts. They applied their knowledge to cell phone plans to discover which plan they would benefit from having. The class also realized how to plan the expenses of a class trip, taking into consideration the amount of people & the cost of the trip per person!

Origami
Pythagorean’s theorem to the rescue! Studying trigonometry and right triangles can be very abstract. We used peg boards & rubber bands to make different size triangles to calculate angle and height measures. We investigated right triangles and perfect square patterns using graph paper and origami.

Pre Algebra
My class discovered the use of percents as not only how I find their grade point average (GPA), but also how restaurants find their sales tax amount and how customers find their tip total. We practiced placing orders and calculating tax plus tip.

Probability
Probability is always a fun topic. My class used playing cards, spinners, marbles, colored chips, dice, other students, etc. to come up with and solve probability equations. Unearthing Patterns that would lead to solving problems without hands-on equipment.

Fractions, fractions, fractions
Fractions – for most people it is a dirty word, but for my class figuring out the patterns and tricks for rational numbers made them less complicated and more appreciated. We worked with colored circle & rectangle pieces until like fractions became more obvious. The students used their family facts to help make unlike terms more user friendly.

Money Tips
We had a certified public accountant speak to the junior class about his education and job requirements. He also gave them tips for starting their 1st job, saving for the future, staying debt free and paying for college wisely!

Drugs
Our class researched a variety of illicit drugs for the toxicology section of our book. They discovered the type of drug, its characteristics/appearance, and effects on the body/mind, how it is taken into the body and where it can be found (if naturally occurring). We watched a video on the signs of withdrawal and drug testing.
