Dollars and Sense
In our Sidewalks Intensive Reading Intervention class we are completing our first unit, titled Dollars and Sense. We learned about building a community, trading & swapping, smart saving, money; it’s value and how kids can have a business. One of the stories we enjoyed most was when we read how money is made in the U.S. Mint. We have also learned that when we read an unknown word we should look to see if it has a prefix or suffix, spot the vowels, split into syllables and read the word. As we learn to LOOK, SPOT, SPILT & READ we are going to become awesome readers.

Exploration
In our Sidewalks Intensive Reading Intervention class we are completing our first unit on Exploration. We learned about our neighborhoods, outer space, out in the woods, sand and whom we ask when we want to know something. When we read about Out in the woods we enjoyed snacking on our own trail mix, which we made at the end of one of our sessions. Besides learning about exploration we have also discovered that we can read quickly if we look at the vowels, blend our sounds and recognize all 20 High frequency words.

Animals Tame and Wild
In our Sidewalks Intensive Reading Intervention class we are one week away from completing our first unit- Animals Tame and wild. We are thrilled that we can read one or two sentences without assistance. We have learned to recognize 15 High Frequency words. These are words we can’t sound out. We have to memorize them.

I can write my name
In our Early Reading Intervention class we have learned and reviewed seven letters and sounds. We are so proud of ourselves because we can identify most of the letters, sound and even write them. Next week we’re looking forward to writing our letters and names using shaving cream.
We are also proud of ourselves because we can finally write our names without looking at our nameplate.

Benchmark Tests
Unit Benchmark tests are being done this month. It’s our chance to show off how much we learned in Unit 1. All of our reading skills, grammar practice, and hard work will pay off. We can’t wait to see what the next Unit theme will be… Maybe money? Or friendship? Or animals? Or perhaps something international? There are so many amazing books to read!
Literacy day Fun
We’re blasting off into reading this year! We hit the ground running and we’re so excited to see what this year will bring. Bringing our stuffed animals in for Literacy Day was so much fun. If we’re ever home and want to read out loud we can read to our stuffed animals. It might seem a little silly at first, but it’s a great way to practice reading. (And we think it’s a lot of fun too!)

What Time is it?
Many have mastered the concept of single feminine/masculine articles, such as “un” and “una”. Join us now, as we venture into “¿Qué Hora Es?” lessons on telling time and counting through sixty. Ask your child for the time, and you just might get the usual responses commonly known among our surrounding Spanish-speaking heritage.
We have traveled!
Up until now, we’ve had opportunities to learn about four fabulous countries. We’ve uncovered details about the mother country, Spain; learned about the battle of Puebla in Mexico; ventured into Guatemala and its rich Mayan history; and finally, El Salvador, being the smallest country in Central America.

Microsoft Office
Juniors and Seniors are getting close to finishing their Microsoft Office project. This week and next week they are working on their final product, which is a creative application of the skills they have picked up in the Microsoft Office textbook.
Excel
8th through tenth grades are currently developing their skill using Microsoft Excel. We will complete one more exercise before we complete a final assessment to gauge our learning. Many of the students have commented on how challenging and useful the assignments have been. This is a vital skill to know in this day and age.
