What FUN to travel!

Seventh graders chose a city and wrote an essay about why they’d like to travel there over any other city in the world. They enjoyed finding beautiful pictures of landscapes, buildings, monuments, etc.

Middle School Essays

Students wrote an essay describing why their first year of middle school is going well or why it has been a challenge so far. They really appreciated the chance to express how they’ve been feeling and to possibly find solutions for the things that have been challenging.

Call or be called

Students are reading The Silver Chair, one of C.S. Lewis’ Narnia books. Almost immediately (in Ch. 2), we began seeing parallels and similarities between the words of Aslan and the Scriptures. One challenge to the students was to ponder the idea of calling: does God call us or do we call Him? Or is it both? Students read several verses to form their opinion.

A Narnia Adventure

We’re currently reading one of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books: The Magician’s Nephew. Students are discovering the unique powers of the green and yellow rings created by Uncle Andrew, and they’re also following the children, Digory and Polly, through their crazy ride through worlds.

Old Yeller

We’ve begun reading the classic novel, Old Yeller. Just as Travis, the main character, eventually took a liking to this devoted dog, our students are falling in love with Old Yeller too. This beloved dog is taking us through a journey of humor and adventure.

Metaphores

Eighth graders made metaphors personal this month. God uses so many metaphors for Himself/His Son in the Bible (ie. Shepherd, Light, Way, Refuge, Shield, etc). Students chose one that was very meaningful to them; they drew or gathered pictures to display and wrote about how God engulfs this metaphor for them personally.

Art and English

One of the best ways to remember tough words is to SEE it. Students chose one of their new spelling or vocabulary words and illustrated it on a 5×7 index card. They always love viewing each other’s artwork.

Prepositions

How do you remember all those prepositions? Well, sixth grade students learned that many can be shown visually. Therefore, students drew a favorite object or animal and strategically wrote prepositions on and around the drawing to show the relationship between the preposition and its object.

What Time is it?

Many have mastered the concept of single feminine/masculine articles, such as “un” and “una”. Join us now, as we venture into “¿Qué Hora Es?” lessons on telling time and counting through sixty. Ask your child for the time, and you just might get the usual responses commonly known among our surrounding Spanish-speaking heritage.

We have traveled!

Up until now, we’ve had opportunities to learn about four fabulous countries. We’ve uncovered details about the mother country, Spain; learned about the battle of Puebla in Mexico; ventured into Guatemala and its rich Mayan history; and finally, El Salvador, being the smallest country in Central America.
