NHS and NJHS
On Tuesday, May 22nd, we conducted our National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society Ceremony. This ceremony is beautiful as students carry during the processional and recessional. We are very proud to have inducted 95 new members to NHS and 13 NJHS. We welcomed back 100 NHS and NJHS members from last year. Both Societies worked very hard on their service project, raising money through bake sales and other means. Students were delighted to take what they had raised to the different institutions. What a blessing to be able to bless others. Please click on the BLUE inserts for our Program.
Here is a little history about the National Honor Society and the criteria for selection:
When the National Honor Society was founded in 1921, the hope was to create an organization that would recognize and encourage high school students’ academic achievement while developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. The National Junior Honor Society was founded shortly thereafter-in 1929 to recognize middle school students in the same areas. Now, over 80 years later, these Societies have become prestigious organizations with outstanding faculty members and students from the school community. Their reputation for excellence is the result of years of commitment on the part of everyone involved. Membership is thus both an honor and a commitment.

Project Citizen is a civics education program develped by the Center for Civics Education. This program “introduces and trains students in the methods and procedures used in political processess.” the goal is to help students develop a “committment to active citizenship.”
Grades 5, 6, and 8 spent the past 3 months researching problems in their communities and solutions. From their research, they developed public policy and developed an action plan. Many of the students stated that Project Citizen has help them become more aware of the problems that their communities face and has given them a method to address them.
Singing…..Dancing…..Drama……Poetry…….Worship……Fashion Show………..Flags……..and using our talents to honor the Lord. Our Spring Celebration was an amazing time and our student worked so very hard. Cinco de Mayo
This month we will have the opportunity to dive into the Mexican culture and the reason they celebrate Cinco de Mayo- The 5Th of May. Ask your students about all the activities occurring during this month. We will have a small 4 de Mayo celebration, if you would like to bring something in. Students will be introduced to Mayan and Aztec cultures and how the beautiful city of Mexico was founded. They will also see a video stream on students in Mexico; they will discuss the similarities and differences from their school life to those students in Mexico.

Academic Fair 2012
Over 1,000 people got a chance to attend our Annual Academic Fair on Thursday, March 22nd from 7pm to 9pm. Each student from Prek 3 through 12th grade designed and inquiry project which included a Project, Project Board, Research Research Paper and Presentation. Projects covered a gamut of Subjects: Science, History, English, Bible, Math, Sports, Home Economics, Technology, Fashion, etc…
The night was filled with excitement, smells of food from different countries, dances, singing, and so much more. We were honored to have with us Ms. Gloria Gaynor, famous for the song “I will survive”. Also, Mr. Michael Strawberry, brother of Darryl Strawberry, a former major-leauger, was able to attend and spend some time with our students. We are seriously honored to have had all the parents and students, families, friends, alumni, associates and partners that were able to attend.
We are so very proud of all of our students and we thank all the parents, staff and students for all of their hard work.

Shopping in Spanish
February was a blessing to us all. The students spiritually blossomed during Spiritual Emphasis week.
6th grade is really picking up their Spanish skills, they are really grasping the concept of conjugating –er and –ar verbs in the present tense form. We are moving into learning how to describe what we are wearing and communicating in Spanish our needs while shopping. Great job 6th grade you should be proud of your growth.

Cuba
6th grade started the year with a great start. The students learned in depth about the Cuban culture. They have been adding new words relating to Cuba and their daily life styles to their vocabulary. I want to thank the Sendra family for sharing their vacation photos of Cuba with the class.

Middle School Christmas Program:
Our middle school shared “Celebrate the Day” in their annual Christmas program. Many students wrote poems and essays to share what it means to celebrate the day that Jesus Christ was born. The songs and dramas were great portrayals of why we celebrate Christmas. The middle school students were such a blessing to parents and the community.

Overcoming the Enemy
Before we were weak we might have shrieked.
Satan was mightier than we.
He was like a bully bounding us, blocking us, and keeping us away from God.
But when all was bleak as we were weak Jesus Christ came.
With His help we overcame Satan, sin, and all his schemes.
Jesus Christ had beaten him a million to one.
Satan lost and we had WON!!!
We made it to our Father like a missing puzzle piece now found.
We now have made it to heaven like a kid making it to his playground.
We made it to heaven because Jesus Christ had come to Earth.
He died for us including you and me.
We then became brothers and sisters in Him like a family.
Because of Him we made it home.
Because of Him we don’t have to just roam.
Because of Him he gave us a way.
Because of Him he saved the day.
Because He died we gained liberty.
Because He died we now are FREE!!!
“Not Too Young”
by Danielle Serrano
I’m not too young to follow His commands
I’m not too young to believe in His plans,
For He knows the plans He has for me
Plans of goodness and prosperity.
I’m not too young to get past the obstacles.
I’m not too young to preach the gospel,
For our purpose in life is to bring glory to Thee
And then off to live life in eternity.
I’m not too young to understand God’s teachings,
I’m not too young to do any of these things.
For I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,
All I have to do is believe.
I’m not too young to love the Lord,
I’m not too young to use the sword.
For God doesn’t have an ending date.
He goes on and on, like the figure eight.
He made the universe, how big, how vast.
Yet He is bigger, He knows the future and past.
I’m not too young, I’m not too young, I’m not too young.
All Middle School Social Studies classes have begun to work on a civics education program called Project Citizen. An inquiry-based program, Project Citizen helps to develop the knowledge and skills needed to become active citizens in order to work to make their communities better.
Grade 6 and 7 – Students continue to learn reading strategies to help digest informational text. Inquiry-based learning has been introduced as well as a number of hands-on projects, simulations, and games. Our lessons are cross-curriculuar, incorporating English, Science, Art, Math, and more!
Grade 8 – Students will be working on the New York City Exit Project in Social Studies for the month of November. Students will investigate a topic within the Progressive Movement in depth. This will allow students to experience immersion in a social studies topic, as well as question, investigate, and present a well-researched project.
