On Monday, October 17, 2011 Kindergarten and Pre-k3 had a fun filled day at Queen County Farm. For most of us it was the first time riding in a large yellow school bus. It was so exciting!  We also enjoyed the bumpy hayride through the farm’s nature trails.  After receiving a guided tour of the farm animals we were each able to select our own pumpkin to take home from their pumpkin patch. Out tour guide taught us how pumpkins, as well as other vine crops, grow from seeds. We ended our trip by eating lunch in one of the farm houses. We all had a great day and looking forward to our next trip.

International Week at Evangel was filled with diversity an a unique blend of rich cultures.  Over 73 different nationa are represented at Evangel and how awesome it is to share about our heritage with eachother.

Each day of the week was filled with something new… from wearing the colors of our flags, to country costumes, to food and desserts from our homelands. Each new student gets tpplace a marker in our wall map to represent where they are form.

We are so blessed at Evangel and we thank God for blessing us with such diversity.

While studying our “Crime Scene Investigation” chapter my students began learning about the steps in investigating a crime scene: how to collect evidence, how to create and use a chain of custody, and how to draw rough and detailed sketches of a crime scene.  Throughout our discussions on each topic we shared how different television episodes and mystery book plots were examples of each idea.  As we learned each topic we practiced by doing a hands-on project.  For collecting evidence we: identified evidence, collected it using gloves and tweezers, bagged it in the appropriate type of container, sealed the container and then created a chain of custody.  We measured and sketched our classroom and created a rough draft of our “crime scene”.

To culminate the chapter I created a scenario of an Evangel staff member having several arguments/altercations at work with  one of them ending in his untimely death.  I then planted evidence and clues, some of which where misleading, while others were critical to solving the case.

We had learned what the 8 types of evidence were and used our layman’s knowledge to investigate and catch a “killer”.  As C.S.I. teams my class divided up the jobs of the investigation team members.  Some took pictures (as they learned how to do in our text) while others collected and bagged evidence, still others interviewed witnesses and to notes to record and document the information so it could be used in a court of law.  The groups took turns using their school ID’s to enter and exit the crime scene during their investigation. At the end of the lab period the “coroner” took away the body of the staff member and my C.S.I. teams when back to the “lab” to start sifting through the known and unknown evidence.  I am happy to say that after all of their hard work, all teams were able to positively identify the “killer” or at least have the killer on their suspect list.

Liberty Science Center was a blast. We had students learning about the passing of communicable diseases. Students were able to walk through a simulated sneeze, ride a subway car that showed the students how easily diseases would pass from one area of the world to another.  We also had students take the challenge to protect their bodies from diseases in the form of a video game. Of course the students were really well behaved while learning about diseases.  (7th grade covers life science.)

The seniors enjoyed the day  in lower Manhattan as they learned about the history of the Federal Hall Museum.  Students got to see the piece of railing that our first president, George Washington, stood behind as he took his oath of office.  They also got to see the ground he stood upon as he was sworn into office.  Students also had the privilege of seeing ground zero and the progress of the freedom tower.  It was a great trip and a way for history to be brought to life for our students.

The 6th grade recently visited the Museum of the Moving Image. This 60 minute tour was led by a Museum Educator and took the students through hands-on exhibits that encouraged them to think about how movies and television shows are made. They visited a new exhibition called “Jim Henson’s Fantastic World” (the creator of the Muppets and known for his work on Sesame Street). Our group also recorded movements in front of a camera and a “flip book”  was made. They did “voice-overs” from the movie “Babe”. They watched a silent film from a movie made over 100 years ago! And laughed it up in the end watching a famous episode called “Job Switching” from the 1952 television series, “I Love Lucy”.

October 26th to the 30th was Spirtual Emphasis week at Evangel.  Students had an amazing week during our Spiritual Emphasis week.  Our younger students learned how God loves them just the way they are. They alsocompleted crafts and sang songs each day with our theme, “Panadamania.”  The students are continuing to learn that God is “wild” about us!  Our older students had an amazing week as our speakers, Ron and Heather Rhoads flew in for the week to share the love of God through the Word and song.  Many students responded to the message that was given each day and we are blessed as a staff to see the seeds being planted in our students’ lives.
