The Civil War

During the first half of October we continued our road to the Civil War, we learned about the Dred Scott court case and how that enraged many anti-slavery citizens. We also learned about two emerging politicians, Lincoln and Douglas, and read about their famous debates as they ran for senate and president.

America

During the first half of October we studied the early English colonies in the Americas, beginning with the disappearing colony of Roanoke, and the entrepreneurial colony of Jamestown. We studied the Pilgrims as they came to Massachusetts Bay Colony in search of religious freedom, and how even freedom-seekers found it difficult to give others their own religious freedom.

Dollars and Sense

In our Sidewalks Intensive Reading Intervention class we just completed our first unit, entitled Dollars and Sense. We learned about building a community, trading & swapping, smart saving, money; it’s value and how kids can have a business. One of the stories we enjoyed most was when we read how money is made in the U.S. Mint.

Reading Intervention

In our Sidewalks Intensive Reading Intervention class we just completed our first unit on Exploration. We learned about our neighborhoods, outer shape, out in the woods, sand and who we ask when we want to know something. When we read about Out in the Woods, we enjoyed snacking on our own trail mix, which we made at the end of that week’s session. Besides learning about exploration we have also discovered that we can read if we look at the vowels and blend our sounds.

Reading Intervention

In our Sidewalks Intensive Reading Intervention class we are completing our first unit- Animals Tame and wild. We are thrilled that we can read one or two sentences without assistance. Last week we were so excited when playing a board game we realized that we have already learned over 15 high frequency words and we discovered that we are able to write and spell most of them.
