We are working on John Bunyan’s, The Pilgrim’s Progress, and finding examples of realistic experiences. We are going to make correlations with a film that depicts believability using fictional characters. With this assignment, we will realize how the media as well as authors use symbolism, allegory and fiction to depict real situations that we as readers and viewers can make personal connections to.

We just completed a chapter on Adolescence, our focus was Social Development and Identity. We learned 4 categories that Psychologist James Marcia developed: Identity Moratorium- time out period of exploration, Identity Foreclosure- commitments based on suggestions from others, Identity Diffusion – “I don’t care” attitude, and Identity Achievement – working on what we desire for our future “right now”. We spoke about how important it is to find who we are and what God has laid out for us as individuals. With this being known, we can all fall under Identity Achievement and reach those goals that God has mapped out for us as believers.

English students were hard at work in December perfecting their short stories and poems for ACSI’s Creative Writing Festival. Fifty of our students’ creative pieces were sent in to this annual competition. We received an outstanding twenty-eight “Excellent” ribbons and nineteen “Good” ribbons. The highest honor possible, “Superior”, went to three of our students whose works were then sent to the District Level to be judged and possibly published in the annual Creative Writing Festival book. Congratulations to all of our participants!

Twenty-five students from the elementary and middle school worked long and hard to participate in the Association of Christian Schools International’s annual Speech Meet competition. Students could choose to participate in a variety of areas including Bible memorization, poetry, dramatic reading, humorous monologue and so forth. Evangel was proud to have five “Superior” winners (the highest award possible), seven “Excellent” ribbons, twelve “Good” ribbons, and one “Honorable Mention” awarded. The competition also featured a special presentation called “Stellar Performances” in which outstanding speeches were performed for the entire audience. Six Evangel students were chosen to come up and share their works! We look forward to continuing this achievement next year! Students of the National Junior Honor Society are working with the National Honor Society to raise money for the American Cancer Society. On Tuesday, April 28, the students went hard to work raising funds through a bake sale. Students, teachers, and staff formed lines to purchase from the array of desserts available. Through the selling of baked good such as cakes, pies, and cookies, N.J.H.S. was able to raise an astounding $170.00! The Honor Societies are well on their way to their overall goal of $1,000.00 to help fight cancer! Check out our photo gallery to see this fun event!

CPR & First Aid has always been one of my favorite topics to teach my 12th Graders. It is something that they can put into practical use right way. Students are placed in real life scenarios and asked to perform life saving techniques. As the course advances, they become progressively more confident in their abilities and are competent and confident enough to respond effectively and efficiently in any given situation.
Mr. Wong
This is the 1st year that we have decided to incorporate soccer into the high school P.E. curriculum. Students are more enthusiastic and excited to play this sport not because they are experts at it, but quite the opposite. They are all novices. Those students who excelled at team handball, volleyball, and basketball are now trying to adjust to feet-eye coordination instead of hand-eye coordination. They welcome this new facet of the game and enjoy improving themselves.

Students are finishing up the year with Astronomy! We will do a brief examination of the solar system and all the planets; pointing out the differences between the inner and outer planets and classifying them by their descriptions. The students are glad to finish on such an interesting topic and I’m excited to see what neat discussions come with all their fascination!

Students are finishing up the year learning how to be healthy! We have exhausted the human body by learning all about how it works and what disease can do to it, so now we need to learn how to keep our bodies healthy. We will be viewing “Supersize Me” as well as watching our diets and testing the caloric intake to see how we stack up to the nutritional guidelines.

Students are finishing up the year learning about forces and motion. We have several exciting activities for this unit such as finding speed by testing the time it takes for different types of balls to travel a distance of 10 km and creating parachutes to test air resistance. Never a dull moment when it comes to gravity!
