New Challenges

Middle school has tried many new things even above their age level. This of course was not told to them till after they started. They have learned in 6th grade to paint with watercolors and the different techniques of how to do this. 7th grade amazed themselves on how well they did when challenged to work with oil pastels. 8th grade did great work with their sculptures. They used paper to create anything from a can of soda to a remarkable detailed drum set.

We had a wonderful Spring Program. Elementary students danced to Shout to the Lord, with streamers. The middle school danced to Go Fast, and high school danced and ministered the songs that they did in Hawaii. The high school electives also danced to I’m Free.

Elements of Literature

Students read two true stories, Gladys Aylward: The Adventure of a Lifetime and Thunder Rolling in the Mountains, and wrote a paper analyzing the author’s use of three elements of literature. To further grasp the themes, especially from a Biblical perspective, students also read Ecclesiastes and 1 Peter. Great discussions resulted as students debated the meaning of life and Christian suffering.

Genetics and Heredity

The 7th grade Science Class worked on a Unit study entitled Genetics/Heredity. As a culminating project each student created three Punnet Square diagrams. This project was to display their understanding of dominate and recessive genotypes.

Civil War

The 7th graders finished up the year studying the Civil War and Reconstruction. They were fascinated to read and analyze first-hand accounts of the war from Civil War veterans and see just how devastating that war was economically, politically, and socially. The students wrote letters to each other as if they lived in the time of the war – some pretended to be soldiers, others were women who became nurses for the Red Cross, others were escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad. They had a great time acting out these letters for each other. They also read a lot about Reconstruction and analyzed through essays the various methods used by the North and the South to rebuild the United States after the war.

Algebra

The 7th graders covered a lot of material this year and some of them really worked hard to improve their critical thinking skills. They enjoyed being creative with their algebra unit as they came up with their own sample problems to challenge each other.

¡Llegamos al fín del año!

From comparing schools in the Spanish-speaking world to ours, and contrasting between the Sweet 16 and Quinceañera celebrations, and the varying aspects within Spanish language itself, it was an amazing culturally-filled year. The best is yet to come. See you next year as we continue to tackle verb conjugations, and form sentences and phrases in Spanish. Looking forward to it.

What Did You Say

In our 7th grade classes one of the most memorable lessons was the lesson about learning to be a good listener. As teenagers, they had to learn the importance of why God gave us two ears and only one mouth. It was a riot to watch the students interact during a lesson where they had to guess what their partner was saying and write it down. The key was that the person speaking had tape over their mouth making it difficult to speak and hear what they were saying. It was a great object lesson, one that I don’t think they will soon forget.

How Shopping Involves Math

The seventh graders have enjoyed learning how the math concepts that they learned in 6th grade have real-world applications. At the beginning of the year, the students all chose one occupation that uses math and conducted research about that job that they shared with the class. Throughout the year, they have enjoyed learning how astronomers use scientific notation to simplify their work, how architects use precise measurements to design buildings, and how chefs use fractions and proportions to create delicious recipes. While learning about the uses of percentages last month, the class particularly enjoyed a Christmas shopping activity. Various items were set up around the room in different states. Each item had a different price. Some items were discounted, some had a sales tax percentage, and some had both a city and sales tax. The students had to calculate the final price of all the items after the discounts were subtracted and taxes were added. Most students chose to shop in Delaware, where there is no sales tax!
