As “Pomp and Circumstance” began to play there wasn’t a “dry eye in the house”. hs-program-2008 Twenty-four seniors walked down the aisle to recieve their diplomas. This truly is a very special twelfth grade class. There were over 500 people in attendance and excitement was “definitely in the air.” Our Dance Instructor, Isabel Rosario, danced to the song “In Christ Alone”. As she danced we were reminded: “In Christ alone, I place my trust, and find my glory in the power of the cross. In every victory, let it be said of me, ‘my source of strength, my source of hope, is Christ alone.'” Mr. Prawel, their homeroom teacher, shared an awesome message with the graduates. Students were challenged to honor the Lord in all that they do. They were also challenged to “be a light” wherever they may go. Awards were given 2008-hs-awardsand diplomas received. Each graduate was given their very own Bible, embossed with their name, as a gift. Valedicatoirian, Jennifer Wong, and Salutatorian, Andrea Basto, also challenged the class and “spurred them on in the Lord.” Paul Rezkalla, the Class Representative, lit the class candle signifying carrying Jesus with them. God was truly glorified at this graduation.

We love you and we will miss you dearly. We pray God’s bleassing over you as you go.

June 24 – 7:00pm Grades 6-12

What an incredible evening with over 360 in attendance. What a great time we had honoring our students academic achievements. Each year we center our Banquet around a theme. This year our theme was “Finding a pearl of great price”. The Fellowship Hall was”decked our” in an underwater theme. It looked fantastic! Students need only achieve Honor Roll status for one quarter to be honored. It was Italian night as we feasted on all types of pasta: Stuffed Shells, Pasta Primavera, Lasagne, Spaghetti and Meatballs, Baked Ziti, Pasta and Broccoli, Tri Color Pasta Salad and Rolls. Mmmmm Good! 127 Trophies were given out in 6 different categories. Pastor addressed us and spurred us onward. He also shared that we would begin to build the new High School in the Spring. A cheer went up from the crowd and all glory was given to the Lord.

Our journey through the World of Psychology continued as we studied the topics of Learning, Memory and Thinking and Language. As we toured the city of “Learning” students learned of the difference between Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning. Students explored the role of Pavlov and Skinner, their experiments, and the significance of these experiments in understanding “learning”.
As we explored the topics of reinforcements (+ and -) and punishment, it was interesting to hear student views on reinforcement and punishment. In fact, students had the opportunity to express their views in two ways. First, students wrote a brief editorial supporting either rewards or punishment (or a combination of the two) as a means of influencing behavior. Second, students assumed the role of Principal of their own school and created a classroom policy for their school – including reasons for implementing such policies.Following our tour of the city of “Learning”, we entered the city of “Memory”.
Our time touring this city will always be a “memorable” experience for our students. Students learned of the types of memory, the processes of memory, and the stages of memory. They also explored strategies that can aid in memorization. Finally, students were informed of the levels of forgetting including more severe cases (i.e. amnesia). Classroom activities used to reinforce theoretical concepts are always fun. Students had the opportunity to recall and share childhood memories. Students also tested their memory through various memory tests (who’s missing, classroom mix-up, false memories, eyewitness, common cents, simon says, college shopping at Staples). One of my favorite moments was when Sir William Shakespeare invited our class to the Globe Theatre to perform his very own work – Shakespearean Sonnets. Students were challenged to memorize Shakespearean Sonnets and perform them in groups – props and all – before the “Lords” and “Ladies” at the historic Globe Theatre (aka C202). All group performances were phenomenal! Our culminating trip was horseback riding at Sweet Hills Riding Center. Students “psychologically bonded” with their horses. What an adventure!

Although our journey through the World of Psychology has come to an end, I trust that the memories created in C202 will last for a lifetime.

12th grade took a four day trip to Elim Bible Institute over Winter vacation to help clean and do various service projects. We enjoyed a time of fellowship and camaraderie as we worked hard and learned about our classmates. We are looking forward to what lies ahead in college!

This year’s senior class was constantly changing in size. I need to recognize the few brave souls who stuck it out the whole year to earn an additional math class credit or an additional regent for their advance regent diploma. I am so proud of them for their effort and continued hard work throughout their last year of HS working up until the day before their regent in order to be prepared. Thank you!

This semester, the 12th grade Physics students have been learning about electricity and magnetism. They constructed series and parallel circuits and determined which is best for Christmas lights. They also used iron filings and compasses to map the magnetic field of a bar magnet.

This year I have had the privilege of teaching Physical Education for Grades three through twelve. The year has been a wonderful learning experience filled with awesome memories. Some of my fonder memories include: High School will always be remembered for their competitiveness. Whether it be playing basketball, dodge ball, or even just sitting around having a conversation, they were always trying to top each other. But the greatest thing that I will be taking away this year is the relationships that I have with my students. I would not trade that for anything in the world.

The 30 Hour Famine is an International youth movement to fight hunger. Students decide to go 30 hours without food. As students go 30 hours without food, they’ll get a taste of what it’s like to be hungry, all the while reaching out to others in need. And as they do that, their compassion will grow: for people around the world, and right here at home. As a fundraiser, our students held a coffeehouse event, which was May 16th through May 17th. In order to share the plight of those suffering from famine, Evangel’s seniors sang, danced, and delivered spoken word. They also presented skits, power point presentations, and a video documentary. In addition to all of that, they served food – a commendable feat since they were fasting. After the coffeehouse (Friday – Saturday), students played games, prayed, participated in Bible studies, completed a service project (adding murals to the first floor bathrooms of the school), had communion, and broke the fast with a pizza party! This experience brought our group closer together, allowed us to help feed hungry children, and blessed us with an opportunity to change our world forever.

On June 5th Juniors and Seniors began to trickle into the school “dressed to the nines”. What a great evening was had by all. Freshmen and Sophmores, dressed in black and white, were hosts and hostesses. Students ate an incredible Italian meal and then the fun began. Teachers gave each Senior a special gift and each Senior left something special for next year’s senior class. At 10:00pm students changed into their “play clothes” and “had a blast” playing in the gym and throwing water balloons outside. There was also a great time of sharing and remeniscing. What an awesome evening we had spending time with the seniors before they graduated. The evening ended at midnight with pizza and soda. We can’t wait until next year’s banquet. A special thank you to 11th graders, Sarah Singh and Daniel Herrera who organized and planned the evening. We’re going to miss you seniors. Please come back and visit us.
