NEHS

On Thursday, June 10th, we were so excited to invite 29 new members into National Elementary Honor Society. This is a beautiful ceremony where students carry candles. The NEHS Officers spoke and there are many presentations give. Officers received blue cords and 5th Graders received yellow cords to wear at graduation. Please see below for the history of NEHS and click on the blue inserts below to see our bulletin. Please see “Galleries” for some great pics.
When the National Honor Society was founded in 1921, the hope was to create an organization that would recognize and encourage high school students’ academic achievement while developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy.  The National Junior Honor Society was founded shortly thereafter-in 1929 to recognize middle school students in the same areas.  Now, over 80 years later, these Societies have become prestigious organizations with outstanding faculty members and students from the school community.  Their  reputation for excellence is the result of years of commitment on the part of everyone involved.  In 2008 the National Elementary Honor Society was established. NEHS now is the first stage for students in a process that can bring recognition in the elementary, middle level and high school years to those students who commit to achievement. Membership is thus both an honor and a commitment.

NEHS recognizes outstanding Elementary school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

For the selection of Members to the NEHS Chapter:

Members must maintain a cumulative overall 85% average or higher for two consecutive semesters with 80% as the lowest grade in all subjects.

Members must be in good behavioral standing.

Members must demonstrate outstanding performance in areas of scholarship, service, leadership and character.

The selection of each Member shall be reviewed and approved by the this School’s Administration and Faculty each school year.

Our Nation’s Capitol

Government and Economic students had the opportunity to travel to our nation’s capital to witness the places where Congressmen debate, Supreme Court Justices deliberate, and the President resides (we even got to see him drive by in the Presidential motorcade!). After seeing the Capitol building, we had a tour at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, where our money is made. We watched real money rolling off the presses, and were told that these machines operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year! That’s a lot of money! We also saw the new 100 dollar bills, which are blue instead of green, and will be coming out the beginning of next year. Our trip ended somberly, with a visit to the Holocaust Museum, where students could see the effects on a nation and its people when limited forms of government are replaced by dictatorship. We left thankful for our civil liberties and system of checks and balances, yet also challenged to stand against injustice in our neighborhoods, cities, and world.

Philadelphia or Bust

As we continued to review for the US History Regents in class, students were able to step outside of the classroom for a day and travel to Philadelphia: a place where the history we were reviewing actually happened. We saw the liberty bell, Carpenter’s Hall (where the First Continental Congress met), the house where Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, and the first National Bank (which we had just been learning about in our discussion of implied powers). Our tour guide gave an excellent review of America’s founding fathers and founding documents, and students were able to stand in the same room at Independence Hall in which the many compromises of the Constitution were debated and voted upon. We even got to see George Washington’s chair, decorated with a painted sun, which Ben Franklin famously alluded to when, as the Constitution was being signed, he said:
“In the course of the Session…[I have] looked at that [sun] behind the President without being able to tell whether it was rising or setting: But now at length I have the happiness to know that it is a rising and not a setting Sun.”
It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to stand in front of that same rising Sun and witness the birthplace of our nation!

NJHS Visits the New York Founding

For the 2009-2010 academic year, Evangel’s National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) decided to raise money for the NY Founding as their service project.  Our NJHS treasurer, Keoana Arnett (an eighth grader), is adopted and her mother spoke with the NJHS advisor of the various organization she knew about.

As stated on their website, “Founded in 1869 as a home for abandoned children, The New York Foundling has continuously and conscientiously expanded its scope of programs to meet the changing needs of the communities we serve. The Foundling’s diverse network of programs works interactively to provide care for families with multiple social, economic, medical, and psychological needs. We protect children from abuse and neglect; we help teen mothers and other overstressed parents to meet the challenges of parenthood; we help developmentally disabled people achieve maximum independence; we provide educationally-enriched child care and preschool; and we meet a variety of community needs in neighborhoods struggling with poverty, drugs, and violence.”

Through bake sales held throughout the year, in which students baked or brought in yummy treats themselves, NJHS raised $300.00 which we presented to Mr. Alan Schatz, a program director at the New York Foundling, on May 27, 2010.  Mr. Schatz provided a tour of the Crisis Nursery to our NJHS students.  The Crisis Nursery is a facility that accepts children at any hour or any day if the parent is unable to care for them at that time.  Mr. Schatz was so grateful and sent a beautiful letter of appreciation to our students in recognition of their endeavors.  Pictures of our day can be see in our school’s website gallery.

NJHS looks forward to the 2010-2011 year in which we can raise both awareness and money for another great cause.

BounceU Trip

For all their hard work, Evangel treated our elementary Speech Meet Team to a fantastic trip! We headed to BounceU which features different bounce houses, inflatable slides, and games. The students had a great time climbing up tall towers and sliding down as fast speeds! They ran obstacles courses and even boxed each other with inflatable gloves. You do not want to miss the pictures and videos on our website! Thank you to our elementary students for their achievements!

Give God the glory

On May 14, 2010, Pastor Lee Rousen, a former NY Giants player and a two-time Super Bowl champion, was brought in by Mr. John Lamb, a teacher at Evangel Christian School. We were pleasantly surprised as Pastor Lee ministered to our 6th-8th grade students as he told them about his rise to football fame while all the while acknowledging Jesus Christ was the one who deserved all the fame and glory. The students absolutely loved getting to know about Pastor Lee’s life and were excited to take pictures and meet with him after. Pastor Lee graciously signed cards for each of our students, which the students were grateful to receive. We thank Pastor Lee for coming in and speaking with our students. Check out the pictures in our gallery!

Congratulations

On April 30, 2010, Samantha Byrne (8th), Angelie Cesario (8th), Jerry Meng (7th), and Kristina Papacostas (8th) represented Evangel Christian School at the annual Association of Christian Schools International Junior High Speech Meet. These four students worked hard to memorize works from the Dramatic Reading, Dramatic Poetry, or Humorous Reading categories. There were two rounds with different judges the students had to recite their pieces to, using only their voice and emotion to convey the author’s thoughts. Each of our students brought home a rating of Good and was awarded with a ribbon and certificates and the awards ceremony. We are so proud of our Speech Meet Team and look forward to continuing to build it up and enter more categories in the future! Be sure to see the pictures from the day’s event in our website gallery.

Percents

We have been reviewing Algebra concepts this month. One in particular that students always seem to have trouble with are percents. We took a trip to a restaurant where students had to figure out what their bill would be when you added a 15% tip. They complained about the extra money but realized it was important to pay a tip and how you have to figure out how much you should pay. It was a great real life experience. As I always say, Math is everywhere.

Leadership

This month we have been looking at qualities that are essential to leadership, in particular, a leader of a church. We looked at thirteen different qualities of a leadership. All of our High School Classes got to go on a trip to the Bowery Mission to put into practice what it means to be a leader.  Students conducted chapel services for the homeless men and women – performing skits, singing songs and sharing. The Bowery mission was a unique experience, because people stayed after the service, even though it was time for them to eat. They wanted to hear the students continue to sing. The students were able to keep going and sharing. This taught them that while in leadership, you have to be flexible. It was a great experience.

Please see “galleries” for some neat pics.
