After reading excerpts from Through Gates of Splendor the students chose a character to create. They have decorated paper dolls to look like the character. Then they researched to person and found ten interesting facts about them. Finally they presented their character to the entire class. Stop by to see the characters hanging around RM. 204

Each child made a poster encouraging people to be volunteers in their community. Their posters turned out great! Some students even had pictures of how they helped out in their own community. Come by and check out our Social Studies corner and see the great posters.

Our Elementary Spring Celebration took place on Sunday, May 3rd. What a wonderful celebration it was; singing, dancing, drama, testimonies, and Scripture verses were all part of this fantastic event. Pre-K3, Pre-K4 and Kindergarten sang, “Clap your hands all you people” and a Jewish song that means we bring you peace. First and Second Grades sang “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High.” The Junior Dance Team danced to “Holy Spirit, Reign Down” dressed in white and purple with purple and silver streamers. “The Eighth Dwarf” is the adorable play that the Junior Drama Team performed at the celebration. Through this drama we learned that God made us and loves us all, despite our shortcomings. At the end of the play the dwarfs asked Snow White and the eighth dwarf, forgetful, to dance with them to a fantastic song entitled, “I am not Forgotten.” To finish the celebration our Junior Chorus sang “He Knows My Name” and the Junior Dance Team danced to a song about God being our Strong Tower. A big thank you to all students and staff for making this celebration so spectacular and glorifying God in song, dance and drama.

hug_a_tree_its_earth_day1In honor of Earth Day, this month we focused on reading books that talked about ways in which we can help our environment. We spoke about recycling, and saving water and energy to help protect our earth. We read  “One Tree,” written by Leslie Bockol. This book is special because it is made from 98% recycled materials.

Our elementary school had its first “Literacy Day: Tales by the Campfire” event. Our fellowship hall was transformed into a campground with stars and a moon dangling from the ceiling, six-foot forest trees, a sleeping tent, and a wonderful faux campfire, which the kids were really excited about. Each class was able to gather around the “fire”, snuggle in their blankets and hold tight to their teddy bears as they were read a series of children’s books by some of our staff and student leaders.

Each class was not only treated to stories by the campfire, but our helpful high school students performed two musicals inspired by two classic children’s books, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Three Little Pigs. This was the highlight for most of the little ones, who especially loved the big bad wolf (he was a silly, not scary wolf!)

The PTF (Parent Teacher Fellowship) generously donated a new book for each class and encouraged all of our students to participate in the Book Fair taking place the following day. Mrs. Barillas, president of PTF was so excited to have this event take place a day prior to the book sale. “I really believe this event helped get the students excited about reading and it seemed to help boost our book sales tremendously!”

Mrs. Marko was so excited to hear such great responses from our students and staff, she decided we should end the school year with another day of reading encouragement. In June we will have an event called, “Literacy Day: Beach, Bonfire and Books!”

It was truly a successful event for all!

Please check out galleries for some great pics.

lenny_lion_balance_ball_pole_hg_clrStudents are having fun working on their balance and learning all kinds of gymnastic moves. They are doing banana rolls, tumbles, bridges and “toes to your head” techniques. They are working on learning how to do push ups, so they can strengthen their arms to be able to learn to do a cartwheel.

female_scientist_with_plants_hg_clrThis week in Science, we are studying plant growth. We are learning about tropisms (special characteristics that plants have) such as roots growing downwards, thanks to gravity, so plants can get the water and nutrients they need, and leaves growing upward toward the sun so they can make food. We are growing our own bean sprouts and seedlings so that we can see this phenomenon of nature actually taking place, and measure how fast it happens.

lightbulb_invent_hg_clrThis week in Social Studies, 4L is studying New York in the early 1900’s and the famous inventions that came about at that time. The class was amazed at the inventions that were foundational to the technologies that we use today such as the typewriter, Kodak cameras, and plastic (celluloid) that came out at that time. We also learned about inventions that we still use frequently today, such as the electric and longer lasting light bulb, Pyrex dishware, and thankfully…the air conditioner!
