How Do You Learn?
January sure was a cold, snowy month. What a great time to curl up with a good book! Line snowflakes, we are all unique, and we each learn differently. In our reading groups we have been talking about how we learn. Do you learn best when you listen to something? When you see it? When you touch it? When we know how we learn, we can be responsible for our own success!

Research Books
Fifth Grade has been working on SRA’s, a reading comprehension program to help them sharpen their reading skills even more. This month they have continued to borrow books as always. They have borrowed books on many different topics in preparation for the academic fair. They have been borrowing books to help them in their research for their topic. Their topics are very diverse – from Forces of Nature to The Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico to Animal Research. They have enjoyed looking for books on their assigned topics.

Wings For The King
Third Grade enjoyed the story, Wings for the King by Anne Sodra. This is a story about a king who wishes to fly to faraway places because he is bored. In his attempt to fly to faraway places he summons his subjects to build him wings and he will reward them with gold. This story is written in a play format and the children really enjoyed how the king finally gets to travel to faraway places. This story is one of my personal favorites. If you get a chance, please read it and I know you will enjoy it as much as the 3rd graders enjoyed it during their library time.

Rosa Parks
Second Grade has continued to borrow books. For this month they borrowed books about the different states since their academic fair will focus on this topic. This last week they also borrowed books on Famous African American leaders of the Civil Rights Movement due to Black History Month fast approaching us. We read A Picture Book about Rosa Parks which they really enjoyed and had very thoughtful questions and comments in response to the book.

SRA’s
First Grade has enjoyed their time in the library. They have been checking out books and they just started working on SRA’s for the first time. The SRA’s are a series of reading comprehensions that the students work on for their library period after returning and borrowing books.

The Gingerbread Man
KV and KT have been listening to The Gingerbread Baby which is a retelling of the Gingerbread Man by Jan Brett. The Gingerbread Baby is a baby because the boy opened the oven too early and the Man was not ready yet, so a playful Gingerbread Baby came out. They also listened to Gingerbread Friends and to The Gingerbread Man. We have compared and contrasted the three stories. Our Kindergarteners have told me that they enjoyed The Gingerbread Man most because they wanted the Gingerbread Man to be eaten by the fox.
Literacy Day
We have enjoyed ourselves during our literacy day reading and learning about Martin Luther King. We are now getting ready for all our upcoming events in February: Valentines Day, our 100th day of school, black history month, as well as preparing projects for the academic fair in March. Join us soon to hear about our upcoming events. God bless!

Community Helpers
Life is like a box of chocolate! This is our latest theme on our bulletin board. During the month of January we discussed community helpers. Students learned about the different jobs that people do around us. They were also given the opportunity to think about what they would like to be when they grow up. You may read their answers on our bulletin board; I had from cashiers, teachers, doctors to scientist etc… It was very exciting for them and for me.

Helping those in need…
We are always looking for opportunities to instill in our the importance of ministering to those in need. An opportunilty arose through the contact of a parent who led us to “Project Angel Hugs.” Project Angel Hugs is a Christ-centered organization ministering to the emotional eeds of children with cancer and their families. To youth touched by cancer and their families, they offer encouragement through prayer, words, gifts, and festivities; harnessing the adundant energy from healthy youth to accomplish work generated by this project while instilling in them a pssion for volunteering.
Evangel students were able to touch a child with cancer by making home-made Valentine’s Cards that will be distributed o Valentine’s Day. We collected 170 Valentine’s cards from our students to send to Project Angel Hugs. The students really enjoyed being able to “reach out and touch someone” in need with card.

Edible b’s and d’s
On January 11th, the kindergartners in our Early Reading intervention program reviewed the letters b & d in a unique and yummy way. Lowercase b and d were formed with donuts and strawberry twizzlers’. Students were instructed to form a b by first forming a bat with the twizzler and adding the ball to the right with the donut. Then they formed a d by first adding a drum with the donut and the twizzler formed the drum sticks to the right. The best part of this lesson was eating the edible letters. Forming letters never tasted so yummy!
